SOUIldS By Charles P.Lamey AFTER BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. Southslde Johnny & thr Anbury Jukr* has to be New Jersey’s favorite homegrown recording artists. After a string of polished, soulful studio albums, Southside Johnny has done what his hardcore following has wanted from the start, and, that is,
recorded a live album.
This two-record set proves why Southside Johnny is one of the forerunners in the R&B revital. He’s a great singer with a band to match. "Live" (Mercury) is the perfect way to catch Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. WILLIE NILE’S first album was praised by the critics, yet Ignored by radio and record buyers. But, his second effort, "Golden Down" (Arista) has a slicker feel to It. He’s an urban singer-songwriter, who combines the best of the Byrds, Dylan, and the Velvet Underground. Most of his material demands listening and the rest won’t embarass anyone. Willie Nile, unlike a lot of songwriters, can hold his own at the microphone, too. It might take several albums, but, eventually, Willie Nile is going to find an audknee for his music. STRAIGHT EIGHT is a hard driving, yet melodic, new British group. "Shuffle ‘n’ Cut" (RCA) is a good start for > them. Some of the material lacks direction, but, for the , most part they write rocking little tunes and sing th^m'^ convincingly well. 6 w ' Straight Eight has talent but they need room to devplop.
Give them a chance.
NOU'ONG AGO. Humble Pi^could sell out the iSpectrum hr Madison Square Garden. Today, they're working their way back to the top by playing small clubs and halls. Their new album, "Go For The Throat" (Atlantic) is proof they haven’t lost the magic they had when they were at their commercial peak. The sound is basically the same. Humble Pie keeps the guitars roaring upfront, with Steve Marriott's soulful, screaming making each track a highly personal testimony. Marriot*|s still one of rock's finest frontment, and I have the hunch it won’t be long before Humble Pie is filling the Spectrum and the Garden again. These boys deserve a break.
