Middle Twp. Goes Over 5,000 Mark in Graduates
by Bill Hallrruin COURT HOUSE - 225 Middle Township Township High School graduates received diplomas during the 73rd annual commencement exercises Aine 9 at Memorial Field, bringing to more than 5,000 the number who have been graduated since the school’s inception in 1909. Following an invocation by the Rev. William Reasoner, class Valedictorian Andrea Balliette spoke oP the important decisons each class member will face and the new responsibilities to be tackled enroute to a successful tomorrow. Class Honor student Maria Webb followed: "We must face the challenges that lie ahead. Making the most of life is the obligation that must be accepted and met with determination, which everyone has the potential to achieve." Honor student James Pickering concluded that during the past 50 years, graduates have entered a world of fear and uncertainty, with the depression and wars of past decades giving way to today’s double-digit inflation and energy shortages. r-C O R N E R £ 0 Mysteries Gain Status By Leslie Steyson O Times have changed! When two mystery writers make the N.Y. Times hardcover best seller list, readers who have been enjoying this 00 type of book for years but were afraid to admit it, can come out of the closet. John D. MacDonald's Free Fall In Crimson is No.3, and Dick Francis' Reflex is No.5. MacDonald fans will deduce from the title that this is 1 another in the long list of Travis Magee stories, all of which have the name of a color included in the , title. These books were originally only published in paperback versions, but became so popular that t later editions came out in hardback. * Condominium, MacDonald's bestseller of a few years ago, introduced him to the non mysteryreading public. Dick Francis has had a steadily growing word- ! of-mouth popularity. When you read one of his books, you are hooked. Some of his stories have been made into television dramas, which perhaps \ accounts for his appearance on the Times list. Francis is an ex-jockey who has ridden some of Queen Elizabeth's horses in races. As would be expected, most of his plots involve horses and racing. What you wouldn’t expect is the high caliber i writing and the fast moving plots. I As one who knows little about either horses or racing, I still cannot put down one of his books after I have started it, and I look forward to the next one. Leslie Steyson is the pseudonym for a very real area bookstore proprietor.

Edmund Webb, Principal, pointing out the 5,000 graduates mark, noted that the present generation must be willing to take the lead from past generations, and that the old generation must accept the leadership of the new generation in the future.
