CAPE l>AY - The prac tice of some residents of placing grass clippings, leaves, litter, and other debris in the public streets and storm drain inlets must cease, according to the Fred Colchen, city

manager.

Debris placed in the streets often washes into the city’s underground storm sewer network, which is designed for drainage of rain water to minimize flooding and standing water. WHEN THE STORM sewers get clogged up with leaves, grass clippings, litter, and other debris, drainage is blocked and flooding of intersections and low lying areas occurs. City workers have found storm inlets, which are the street surface or curb edge openings into the storm sewers, filled with grass clippings, beverage con-

tainers! leaves, and other

material.

A SERIOUS side effect of clogged storm sewers is that the bacteria which grow in them over a period of time can lead to pollution which eventually ends up on the beachfront, in the Harbor or in Cape Island Creek depending’ on the neighborhood involved. Cape May is completing a comprehensive five-year "Clean Waters" campaign which has significantly reduced pollution throughout the Island. Efforts are underway to solve the few isolated problems | which remain. AU citizens are requested to help by remembering and by reminding others not to place any debris in the streets or storm inlets. Police have been directed to issue tickets for littering to all violators.
