By Anne Galli You see it everywhere-along the edge of the marsh, bordering the Parkway—tall and statelv waving in the breeze. Common reed of phragmites (pronounced frag-mi-tees) is a large nerenial grass which invades wet areas that have been disturbed.

The plants grow in. dense stands from underground spreading rhizomes. The flowering head is crowded with long silky hairs which are purplish when young and tunt fluffy and tan as they age. Worldwide in distribution, this plant is considered to be nuisance because it outcompetes plants which are more valuable in terms of food of wildlife. Yet it is a favorite of dried flower collectors as an attractive addition to a floral' arrangement. American Indians used the tall stems, cut' to size, as shafts for arrows.
