WILDWOOD' — Although differing philosophically an most major issues, gubernatorial- candidates James Florio and Thomas Kean both agree that something has to be done to putteetb in the state's existing criminal justice system. The two candidates were iri town Saturday to address the state's Veterans of Foreign Wars contention. Although both addressed the issue of the now doomed proposal for the establishment of a veterans' hospital in Camden, th€ major thrust of their words was toward the need to provide security fey state residents and get the habitual criminal off the street. • fllE ALL-PERVASIVE issue that will cut across all others in this campaign is public safety,” Florio said. "The right to be secure with one's person and property is 'all important. If you don’t have that—forget it, TVs absolutely essential that we target our resources towards making our criminal justice system work,” the

Democrat candidate continued.

Tie noted that of the large number of people involved in crinle only 7 per cent are habitual criminals. It is this 7 per cent, however, that’s responsible for 25 per cent of all violent crimes. "We need to identify and isolate the career criminal,” he said.

AS TO THE VETERANS hoMital. Mr. Florio stated that "lam very troubled with what is happening in regards to veterans commitments." He said it was sad to see after all the fffort put into the project that the necessary funding was denied by the new administration at the last minute. "I think this Is unfortunately symptomatic of what happens too may times at all levels of government,” the 1st District congressman said. REPUBLICAN NOMINEE Thomas Kean also saw a need for an improved system df administering criminal justice. "There’s no question in my mind that the state criminal justice system is not working,” he said.

According to the candidate, he will have a program for violent crime that will stop what he refers to as the current "revolving-door” system of criminal - justice. "We will rewrite the juvenile justice system andrestore the death penalty,” he said. Whose that commit violent crimes ai^ going to go into prison and stay

The candidate also told the veterans he doesn’t believe the Reagan Administration's decision to abolish the'VA hospital plan is irreversible. “I will fight for it,” he said. -• . NOTING THAT HE is delighted with the Reagan Administration's efforts to upgrade the nation’s defenses, Mr. Kqan stated that we "must insure this counthy that we are number one.” "Ronald Reagan is keeping bis pledge to establish a stronger defense,’’ he said. W» the home front, the candidate called fowax tuts and provisions for providing all state residents with job*. "There are people who say we can’t cut taxes and pro- ‘ vide jobs,” he said. "To that-I say

nonsense."

For the two candidates, who addressed the convention in separate remarks, it was one of their first appearances before the same audience since the primary election.
