by J. A. Cunhinghar Southerners are often shocked when they see the “Stars and Bars" of the battleship Merrimac in the Cape May County Historical Museum. When the order came to abandon ship after the battle with the Monitor, a sailor, Harold Peabody, hid the flag in his shirt.,Years later, he sent the flag to a Northerner who had befriended him, relating the story in a letter. This man gave it to his minister, the Rev. I.S. Whitaker, who donated it to the museum in 1933. The flag should be called t(iat of the Virginia, as the Merrimac was rechristened when coiurerted to a battleship. History and euphony make it probable it will continue to be known as the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. t Former museum curator Karl Dickinson always reminded irate Southerners protesting its site, that Cape May County is below the Mason-Dixon Line. J.A. Cunningham is co-author of the popular book on Jersey Cape history, "Cape May County Story."
