, By Anne Oalli They’re in the move so beware! Each year during June andyfearly July the remale,.diamondback Terrapin — our only common salt marsh turtle- comes out of the w|!ter in search of a nest site. On the move day or night, many meet an untimely death as they attempt to cross our busy causeways. Females prefer to lay their eggs near an undistrubed dune. If dunes aren’t available, nesting occurs in open areas with few roots, including yards and sandy parking lots. A clutch contains 5 to 12 ovoid, white, leathery eggs. Most young hatch in the late summer and fall, although some of the young \vill remain in the nest until the following spHng. Young turtles oftln get trapped in storm drains. If you find one, release it back into the salt marsh where it can find the food and shelter it requires. \ Anne Galli. is asst, director of the Wetlands In stitule.
