There is one thing you can say about Jersey Cape fishing this year — it hits the heights and sometimes plunges to the depths, in catches, and good fishing keeps popping up In a variety of locations. Last week some of the more adventuresome boats found some good fishing off near the 20 fathom curve, and some enterprising cap-. tains went way up the bay to Miah Maul Light, and found big weakfish there. NOW. AS TO the first part of my statement, I’ve got to apologize for a name error, Jimmy Krejacek caught the first white marlin of the season, and I reported his name as Craig Jack. He brought it into South Jersey Fishing center, and as far as I can determine it was the very first white marlin caught. My apologies, Jim! He was fishing on the boat Our pal and they also brought yellowfin tuna back on the same trip. Jack Osborne, on the Red Beard was another of those off-shore boats, and he introduced Rob Rudolph to some light tackle angling for yellowfin tuna. Bob caught a 50 lb. yellow fin on 20 lb. test, then Jack got one on 30 lb. test, and they wound up their catch of four with two-50 pounders on 50 /lb. test. Jack Delaney, on the Barbara out of Rosemans, strayed away from the fleet and fished up the bay east of No. 19 buoy, and brought back 32 big weakfish. It seems like most of the big weakfish are up fhc bay right now east of Miah Maul Light — but you have to fish for them with top and bottom rigs, and shedder crabs seem to be a preferred bait. The big head boats hqve been bringing in scattered catches of big blues from the ocean; along with somtf nice catches by the trolling boats on these jumbos. Cpt. Joey Roseman on the Miss Penf’eld had 42 jumbos from 12 to 14 lbs. for his party on Sunday. Cpt. Steve Rea produced a boxfun'catch for his party dn the Bivo on the jveekend. WEEK AFTER next you'll be hearing about the results of the $10,000 white marlin open that South Jersey Fishing Center is promoting. Cpt. Dick Weber says that they have 80 boats entered and I hope to be able to give you a first hand account on this contest that run5 July 9.10 and 11. Cpt. Bill I-ewls of Cape May, who ran the Miss Anthracite and her successor the Miss Shirt for seven years, is now going to captain a new boat — the Salty Pepper, a 46 ft. Hatteras out of South Jersey Fishing Center. Cpt. Bill is a charter boat legend going back to the days of "Ike Swain," and I personally want to wish him luck on this new charter. I’ll try to keep abreast of his catches. WE HAD AN air-sea rescue last week from offshore that I’m sure you’ve all ready about; but the captain who called the Coast Guard. and guided the chopper to his position didn't even get mentioned. Cpt. Walt Haas, on the Hawser was that fellow, and without his experience, the whole event couldn't have occurred.
Ail due credit is due to the C.G. chopper that picked s. Edward McCafferty of Lin wood off the Hawser when he had a stroke, and equal credit should be given to the Middle Township Ambulance Corps, headed by Jim McClure; and also to the ^✓Emergency Room crew at Burdette Tomlin Hospital who administered treatment. But unless Cpt. Walt had known how to get in' touch with the Coast Guard Search and Rescue team and give his exact position, we would have had another , tragedy at sea. So I say a tip of the Old Anglers hat to CpLWalt Haas for reacting very well in an extreme emergency. OUR CHARTER boat fleet has an unbelievable record of safety in light of the tremendous amounts of people they take fishing, “ and all too often these captains don’t get the recognition they deserve. Now on to fishing. The wind blew a gale on Friday and Saturday, but Jack Douglass of Court House and I had planned on going fishing, so we set out anyway on Saturday morning to try to get up the bay after those big weakfish. Jim Delaney tried to tell us it was blowing too hard, but we decided to take a look for ourselves, and after we got offshore about a quarter of a mile we realized he was right, so we headed back up the canal, and out Cold Spring Inlet for the ocean where we found the whole Cape May fleet fishing right - off the Sea Buoy on down towards Wildwood Crest for flounder. Cpt. Al DolinsM on the Big Jim II passed us on his way to*inpther drift, and we started fishing alongside of Cpt. Tom Roberts on the My Gal. About rfoon we had 24 of thfe ' small flounder everyone' was catching, so we decided to return to Rosman’s. Cpt. Tom Roberts on the My Gal said, "What the Heck. They may be small. . but they’re, better than .nothihg.” Quite a few of the canyon boats were offshore because there was talk of more marlin being taken during the week. Maybe I’ll have more on that later. LAST MINUTE News Flash: White marlin have been caught! Jack Osborne on the Red Beard had two white marlin, both caught by Don Murphy, and eight tuna in the 50 lbs. class. And the South Jersey Fishing Center weighed in five whites Sunday night: The Glass Machine had two. one — the biggest so far this year — 89 lbs.; theR • T had two; Five Star hooked into one. And the Fish 'N Fool, captained by Jim Lummis, had the first swordfish on hook and line — a 34 pounder caught by Danny Kubiak. Skating Tues., Wed. AVALON - Dave Haberle. director of recreation, has announced roller skating for the kids at Community Hall every Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 On Tuesdays, there will be Roller Hockey at the 10th Street ice rink at 7 p.m. Skate rentals will be available at both activities
