The Spike
E By Arnaud deBorchgrave & Robert Moss This is one of the best books I’ve reacflately. It is . written by two foreign correspondents who know their way around the intelligence services of the world. | The book poses the question — and perhaps answers it - "Can America, and the free world, survive without an intelligence agency which is efl fective?" Before World War II this country was at a disadvantage because of a Gent/emen do not read other people's mail policy. Fortunately for us, our allies the British had a splendid secret service. In this book, a young radical reporter writes an expose of CIA actions for an underground newspaper. His articles bring him to the attenUon of the editor of a New York newspaper, and he is hired to cover stories all over the world. He is sent to Vietnam when that action becomes part of the daily news, and as a good journalist, he tries to dig a little deeper than many of the foreign correspondents. His friendship with a French journalist helps him uncover many sources for stories. As he roams from Washington, where he has friends in the administration in power, to the capitals of Europe, he begins to question many things he had pnee taken for granted. \ His childhood sweetheart and her \mbitious brother, a famous movie star with radical opinions, a KGB agent unhappy about his future, the pkst and present CIA chiefs — all play important parts in fhe journalist’s destiny. Incidentally, the "spike" is where news stories are placed which will never see the ink of a newspaper. * • Leslie Steyson is the pseudonym for a very real ^^^reajbookstor^proprieto^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.
