Gypsy Moth Peril V •

TRENTON - Assemblyman Joseph W Chinnici fR. 1st Dist.) has introduced legislation aimed at studying the best means of controlling the spread of the destructive gypsy moth throughout New Jersey. Chinnici's measure will establish a fivemetnber commission which will study the . feasibility of controlling the gypsy moth on a state-wide basis, and then report its findings to the Legislature within a six-month period after enactment of the measure. "THE PROBLEM of the gypsy moth is reaching epidemic proportions in New Jersey and we have to take positive steps to control if," said Chinnici. “After trees have been defoliated several seasons in a row,” Chinnici explained, “the chances for survival are greatly reduced. The caterpillar stage of the gypsy moth prefers to eat oak trees, one of New Jersey's most valuable woodland resources, but if these are not available they will go after softwood trees, ornamental shrubs and even fruit-bearing trees." CHINNICI SAID he has sponsored ap

propriations resolutions in past years to jcontrol the insect pest but this year's resolution failed * "The problem we have is that legislators from areas not yet affected, but eventually will be. do not realize what is happening in many areas within Ne\j; Jersey " "Hopefully, the report and its proposals for legislation from the study commission will bring home the full impact of what is happening to our forest resources," Chinnici said THE COMMISSION will be composed of five members, one appointed by tl\e Secretary of Agriculture, one by the Commissioner of Environmental Protection, one by the Speaker of the General Assembly, and one by the President of the Senate. In addition, the Governor will appoint one member who is a Freeholder "The goal of the commission," noted Chinnici. “will be to come up with the safest and most effective plan for controlling the spread of the gypsy moth, and reducing damage to the trees II we don't take these steps now. the situation will only become graver."
