Hefald X UiXern 22 |uly jt'i British Seagal 1387 Little Things Count by.Ima Byrd Sometimes humans get hung up on the big things in life like war, nuclear persuasions and stuff'like that. In their big worries they often* forget about the little, insignificant things that make up the greater portion of their existence. In fact, humans get so wrapped up in their own success that they often ignore all the bits and pieces of life. We birds were sitting over at Blakes Dock in the Crest the other day chewing on some bits and pieces of our own, when our most fascinating seagull, Lovebird, flew in to join us. Lovebird was always pushing peace and happiness to birds and people. He was somewhat of an orator and would go about the country singing love songs. He had a great following, so naturally we listened to what he had to say. \ "My great uncleHold me that if a bird lovted you, cared about you and was considerate of you, then there was no way you would want to leave that bird," he said seriously. "Humans are cruel. They put people in institutions for the aged and forget about them. If some of the old people's relatives and friends would visit they they wouldn’t be solonely. We birds see a lot of sadness," Lovebird continued, singing a strange and wonderful song. He stopped singing and we sat around watching the people. Then the great orator spoke again.: "Once I'd gotten friendly with a dog,.Sassy, who lived by the bay. His people had forgotten about him and whenever I’d c<pne over he’d bound around the front yard barking and carrying on — he was that lonely. Sassy told me how his people had gotton so busy doing other-things that they never bothered with him anymore. Sure, they saw that he got water and food, but it seemd as if no one wanted to talk with him or play with him. Everybody in

"1 just want to thapk you for talking to me," Sassy said

to me.

Lovebird wiped a tear from his eye and then went on. He was a sensitive bird and we respected that aspect of his character. v "Well, we sat for a long time — bird and dog — not say ing a word to each other. Sassy stretched out on the newmown grass and I sat nearby watching the old fellow Suddenly he Spoke. "You know it isn't just me they're hurting, but they're hurting themselves. Why we'had so mtteh fun running on the beach chasing clamshells — it was ^reat .' " he said. Then I got a brilliant idea. I told Sassy Fd be right back and headed for the beach Once dowt> on the sand I picked up a clamshell and then went back inland. Sassy looked up as I dropped the shell about 200 feet froth where he was resting. Something inside the old flog came to life as he picked up the shell and chased me around the lawn. I got the shell from him and he Chased me around and around the house knocking into people and creating somewhat of a disturbance to the party assembled around the barbecue grill in the backyard. Sassy got the shell from me and I flew up to the roof to see what would nappen next. "I believe your dog is going crazy," said one of the guests indignantly. Sassy sat on his back paws and looked at his master. The hugfc clamshell protruded from his wet mouth like a giant mishappen tooth. The other guests look ed at the dog curiously as Sassy's master removed the clamshell. "It was then that I started singing my sweetest love song,” said Lovebird. The man looked at Sassy’s face and then at his eyes. "Are things that bad fellow," he said gently. "I didn't realize." he said kindly. The man looked at his guests and then at his dog. Til be back in a little^ while, just help yourselves to everything." he called to his startled guests. Sassy bounded after his master, wagging his tail. "I followed them to the beach and sat on the bulkhead watching Sassy run back and forth with his master The old spark was in his ey®<as fie searched out another clam shell. The big black dog came back to where his master

31 was sitting-and dropped the shell. The man gazed at the ocean and then at his dog. "This is the best day of my life Sowy, thank you. The guests can waih we've got some y playing to do. ’ he yelled getting up and running down th6 beach ahead of the dog. Lovebird looked at us and knew he’d made a point “Little things do count in'any world," he said, singing his lovt* song agian. ** NE)CT WEEK'— Drunkf Sr Druggies
