The small Village of Dennisville was one of the most active communities .in the county in the eighteenth century. With outlets to the bay and surrounded by forests of virgin cedar, shipbuilding

and lumbering were natural industries.

Cedar ‘shakes’ or shingles were used locally and were shipped to wherever there was a market — especially Philadelphia. It'is said the original roof of Independence Hall was made (rom Den ;

nisville shingles.

In the IfKh century, huge, perfectly preserved cedar trees whic] had blown down were found under the mud of the swamps, whii revitalize^ the shingle industry. These were said to last over ,100

years.

Documentation exists to show that when the roof of Independence Hall was renewed in the 1800s, Dennisville shingles were used again. J.A. Cunningham is co-author of the popular book on Jersey Cape history, "Cape May County Story."
