OCIAN AND DAy| SOUNDINGS

3 Sy Boyd Ty(•rj

MY COLUMN this week is going to sound like something from two different worlds; and I guess as I look over the reports I have in front of me, it really is just that. First there's the Bay, and at the head of the column is thei210 lb. tiger shark taken irt the 60 ft. Slough inside of Brandywine Light at the first of the week.

manager of Wildwood Golf & Country Club, said that he had good luck right offshore from the string of white stakes near el9 Buoy.

The Bay is one world that I believe will really start producing in the next two weeks as anglers tire of catching the small flounders being found along the oceanfront.

IG OF FLQUNDEI

STRING OF FLOUNDER on the stern deck of a crowded Fiesta shows the partyboaters are catching fish.

Ken Rudd called me on it, and he told me he had weighed in two drum for Rob Gregory on Sunday, a 36 A 27 pounder, and also a 27 lb drum taken by Sue Gidden. They were all caught east of 14 foot Light. That's amazing for this time of the year NOW. RACK TO the sharks. Capt. Jim Solly was telling me that they have 15 sharks entered in the Inn Shark Fishing Contest, and 8 or 9 of them go over 10h pounds; and two of the Jaws variety are in the 200 lij. class. Most of these came from

the bay

Then FJIrry Rowman ' was telling me'Hhat he

caught some nice fldunddr ? 2 to

in'the anchorage in the 2 i 4 lb. class. After that Jack Douglass reported that on Wednesday he caught 3(f nice weakfish at the can buoy off of Bug Light; and on Friday, Ray Shaw.

NOW. ON TO THE other world — the Ocean. I don't know how to phrase this, but I’ve got to say it tike it is. The heat^bo^ts are picking up large in nmber but small in size floun'der right on the oceanfront. They aren'J big fish, and some anglers are satisified with them. I don't blame the head boat captains either—they’re fishing in the only-place they know there's fish, but because I don’t want to mislead anyone—I have to hsay they’re small flounder. HopefuJIy new schools will show up. and the quality will improve. Offshore the charter boats are finding some real, big jumbo blues. I was at Mill Creek Marina on Tuesday, and saw Cpt Doug Gavetti who runs the El Taro unload 30 blues in the 10 to 12 Itl range, and a very satisfied pjirty. Cpt. Wait Haas oh the Hawker

pulled in right after that with the same size catch.

On 'Wednesday, Jack /&

1 back

Keenan Osborn came back with 27 jumbo blues 8 to 14 lbs. in size, and a happy

party.

JACK STARTED off at McCries shoal, and moved to the South schoal and picked a couple, but then he got a call from Cpt. Bill Garrison, who was running the Satan's Lady and loading up on big hlues at the NE end, and that's where he got his catch. Then Isabelle Hawkey was telling me on Thursday night that Jeff Severance had stopped in and told her that Cpt. Joe Drosey on the Miss Pdnfield had gotten,47 jumbo blues with Jeff mating that day

I THINK THE real action is in 30 to 35 fathoms, so look it over real good before you go farther oh to the canyon. One other tip if you’re going canyon fishing—any day after 4:30 in the afternoon you can call area code 201-349-1152, and get thVweather in the canyon. This is a valuable service, because the ea-, nyon m truly another world.

Around the South Jersey Fishing Center there was good news from the canyon Cpt. Rill Kieldsen and the Bonita had four yellow fin tuna on the 30 fathom line, and had raised two whites which didn’t hook up, and Cpt. George Lewis on the Glajs Machine caught two whites

Oh yes, one tiling I ■forgot—Frank Seagraves told me he caught a 9 lb weakfish off a jetty in Stone Harbor Thursday morning As i close its with an apology to Ed and MHIIe Morris — On June 28 Nick Repici III. age 7, caught a 5*2 lb. founder Jt Green Bank. Thai news is late, but a least it got in!

and landed six yellow fips-

coming back to th< fathom line to help Cpt. Bill on the Bonito as. he had developed trouble on one

erigine.

FISHING is good on the Jersey Cape. Try to get out there when you can,’and take a kid with^ou! One last note: Cpt. David Roseman is arriving home for a weeks vacation from Coos Bay, Oregon on the Neptune where he has been very successful commer ^cial fishing. His week here should make a good storyon where he’s going to fish, and what he' going to catch I'll let you know next week. V
