If Cape May County had one symbol to represent it, it might be the lighthouse at Cape Mrfy Point. From our country's beginnings, the Delaware Bay has bee»a heavily traveled waterway. The British government had a lighthouse at Cape May Point as early as 1744 The second lighthouse at this site was built in 1823 of bricks imported from Philadelphia. (Structures of brick and stone were rare in colonial Cape May County). . The third and present lighthouse was constructed in 1859, the beacon lighted first by a kerosene wick lamp, and later by an incandescent oil-vapor lamp. " j In )938, a 250 watt electric light with hundreds of prisms cast a light 19 miles out to sea. This lens was later removed and is on display at the Cape may County Historical Museum.. J A Cunningham is co-author of the popular booh Jersey Cape History, "Cape May County Story.", ,
