Figure I: Structure of a mollusc.

by Wendy Beard Allen
Picking up shells as one strolls along the beach is a pastime many enjoy, but now- many of us think about the animal that once lived in the shell? Shells are merely the external coverings produced by a living animal. Shelled animals belong to a group of organisms known as molluscs. In general, a
mollusc is a soft-bodied
animal usually covered by a calcareous shell. sisting of a head which con-. Most of these-animalS efx- ' tains mouth and eye parts; hibit a common overall a foot, useful jn motility structure (figure I) con- and/or burrowing; a man- J t tie, from which the shelji r. /,., >,«.,/ velig., /.in.i ' forming calcium carbonate . is secreted; and the bulk of
the body formed by the visceral mass which
envelops the digestiye-and
respiratory organs.
A mollusc begins its life as a fertile, single-celled egg. The egg develops into a ciliated, microscopic, frfeeswimming larva. In this form th^ young mollusc is at the mercy of the environment. If it survives it will develop into another freeswimming form, the veliger larva, (Figure 2 & 3). Dur-
ing this stage, the larva
develops the characteristic features associated with the
adult mollusc.
