N WHJjWOOD — It rises like a facelcrT?rey monolith behind the stor/e and concrete seawall on the t’dgc of Hereford Inlet. Of stone lind wood and glass, the new home of Ed and Ayne Zaberer on Anglesca Drive is imposing to the point of being brealht#ihg It may be described as ultra modern; but Zaberized seems more befitting.

Anyone at all familiar with the

Jersey Cape knows that a Zaberized cocktail means

something special, a drink that may have common ingredients but is as beyond the ordinary as the meal it complements. Just as

Zaberer's Anglesea Inn has

become a tradition, so the home

of inn keepers Ed and Ayne

Zaberer is destined to become an

architectural landmark.

Ed and Ayne had been in their

•neyy home exactly one week

when County Magazine paid a visit. Ayne was preparing coffee

in the red tiled grotto-like kit-

chen area, where white appointnfents provide a bracing coolness from the sunlit rooms on several

levels all but surrounding the

food preparation center. Ed had just returned from his morning 1 jog and was in the sauna in his bedroom/bath suite op the fourth

The home has five levels, and architect Mark Jason Spector of Coral Gables, Fla. (whom Avne describes as “a genius”) followed Mrs. Zaberer’s request for “a place with angles" to the letter in designing this home, where interior areas flow into one

another, and outside and inside seem inseparable. Open, carpeted stairs add to the airy atmosphere and tie in the solid, tile-floored entry level with the lofty wood and glass tower at the top level. In between, the texture of thick carpeting, the rich grain of natural woods set at angles to tbe different planes are bathed in sunlight from large windows of

varied sizes.

From inside looking out, the view is spectacular. Ascending the stairs, one may expect to see a- gull or two’soaring about the tower as if investigating this new thing by the shore; is it a huge rock, a giant piece of driftwood, the bow of a ship? For Ed, the view overlooking Hereford Inlet and Champagne Island is especially meaningful, for since childhood he has watched the changing sea and the erosion and accretion of what today is but a sandbar, daily growing or diminishing with the ebbing pr

rising tide.

area, walk-in closets the size of small rooms; and the music piped throughout the house, even to the outside decks. ' While the Zaberers had moved in a week earlier, there were still things remaining to be finished; the draperies and some of the furnishings hadn't yet arrived. Qn the level overlooking the fireplaced livirigroom area, only two red leather wingback chairs and tv set were in pilace; awaiting the oigan/piano con- ' sole, which Ayne finds relaxing to play and others enjoy hearing. Besides music, hertbther hobbies and activities include oil painting, tertnis and jogging. According to Aynd, Ed’s hobby is work, and the world famous restaurateur proved that by supervising “the mechanics” who built their spectacular home, just up Maryland Avenue from, arid within sight of, their restaurant. Despite the proximity to their work (son Don, who lives nearby, also puts in countless hours seeing that the family restaurant’s reputation doesn't falter), the Zaberers know where

Beach, Fla., it is evident the Zaberers have a feeling for the

sea.

Their newest home (for years they spent their summers in the apartment above the restaurant) is anchored in deep Concrete and supported by steel beams; although only the wood beams in the cathedraEceilings are*visible. Among tl* many outstanding interior feafo-es of the home' , one which is”vident from the outside is the pink glow in the \ night sky emanating from the florescent bubble dome above the super spa whirlpool bath in Ayne’s bedroom/bath suite on the top level. The tub is surrounded by colorful ceramic tile / -and elevated slightly above the ’carpeted floor: Other features include the laundry chutes from the master bedrooms and guestroom’to the washer-dryer

to draw the line; and while Ayne intends to have a small office in her new home, it is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle ■in the office, kitchen and diningrooms before the restaurant opens and after it closes. While their home is too new for them to have established favorite rooms, Ayne has found the spa most relaxing, and Ed has delighted “watching the little red ball come up” over the inlet in the morning from the sunroom at the head of the stairs bn the third level. From the outside, a passerby sees a large umbrella opened over a round table and a few deck chairs in the sunroom window. Regardless of the vantage point, even this cozy area illustrates how inside and outside meet in this Zaberized home by the sea.
