A RECENT POLL OF RADIO d.j.’s resulted in Spirit being voted the most- popular rock blind. Over legends such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, and Who, the radio industry picked this cult favorite, An odd choice, you might say, but Spirit were an adventurous group in the late sixties. They experimented in time changes and were influenced by Jazz and Indian music, as well as vintage rock and blues. To top it off, they possessed one of the most original guitarists to ever come out of America, Randy California. RHINO RECORDS HAS JUST issued a Spirit album, which has sat on the shelf because their former label, Columbia, didn't think it had commercial potential. True, the story line is a simple fairytale, but the overall work is quite enjoyable. Even when the story becomes a bit trite, the musicianship - especially Randy California’s fluid guitar style — saves the day. Spirit is still out on the road, and, while new recordings are forthcoming, The Adventure* Of Kaptain Kopter and Commander Caaaidy In Potato Land should prove to people why Spirit were the darlings of FM underground radio in.the late sixties. Spirit have the potential to offer more vital music in this decade, too. LOS ANGELES HAS PRODUCED a lot of exceptional rock in the past year or IwoTBuTX is probably the besl.the city has to offer. Their second album Wild Gift (Slash),has just been released and it’s another intense offering. While the vocals sometimes sound like an energetic Jefferson Airplane, the music is powerfully awesome. They write great songs and perform them with passion, and, although X isn’t on a major label, they stand a good chance of becoming one of the more important rock bands in the eighties. t • • ALSO FROM LOS ANGELES and with a seppnd album, Look Out (Epic), is 20/20. This group deserves a hit single. They've absorbed all th6 right things from mid-sixties bands such as The Beatles, Byrds, and Kinks, added their own personal touch and have come up with an infectious sound. This is fun pop music. Give 20/20 a break and they could surprise a lot of people.
