ollowing Father's Footsteps on Navy's Second Oldest Ship

‘‘I’ve marched in paradas at my high school back home,” said the Middle Township High Sihool graduate. “I'm glad I got to march in the parade in New York ; it was great to be part of the tradition.'' THE JERSEY CAPE Navyman is also part of another tradition. The son of Lt. Cmdf. and Mrs. A.F. Cornell of 7 Timberlea Lane, Cape May Court House, is a second generation Vulcan crewmember.

“My father was on the Vulcan 22 years ago,” said Cornell. "In fact, when I was young, I saw Santa Claus for the first time on the Vulcan at Christmas.” Cornell’s father is now a Teacher in the navy Junior Reserve pfficers Training Corps at Middip Township .High Schoon THE Vulcan WAS commissioned in 1941fand is the second oldest ship in the active fleet. It has a crew of 700' men and women who repair combatant ships. The ship has a foundry various metalworking shops, a diesel shop, a carpentry shop and an optical shop, among others. On board the Vukan, Cornell is following in his father’s footsteps as a radioman. His job consists of sending and receiving all of the Vulcan's messages and. keeping the equipment in working order.
