night. • • •• HAROLD W. GRIFFIN is surely one of Stone Harbor’s stellar citizens. Both Harold and his wife, Ethel have lived here for years and they have been produc live ones. For ten years , Ethel owned and ran the Shell shop opposite thfe Shelter Haven on ,96th St As a young man, Harold started his career at the Industrial School of Art in PhTladelphia When he wanted further training he went to New York in 1929 to study with Irauros Phoenix. There w.ere many instructors at the school, each with his own specialty, and for two years Harold studied composition under no less than Norman Hock well whom he descMbes as a "great ribber and tease" when not Working. Where art was concerned Rock-well was a taskmaster and perfectionist, FOR YEARS Harold has been a teacher, lecturer, and critic. He has judged at many local art shows. Among them he has served as judge at the Women's Civic Club Art Shows numerous times and also at the Art. Show at the beach His more talented students 'have won many awards iiv competition He still gives painting lessons at his home at 10010 Coriithian DR three times weekly to selected students. WHEN JOE BROPHY organizes a ribbon-cutting ceremony (or anything else for that matter) he leaves no stone unturned. Therefore, when Mayor' EHjworlhr Armacost cut the jadq green ribbon marking the official opening of the Whitebner Beach Club Condominium all the ingredients fola posh celebration were there Lots of Brass including owners Edwin ijFerren. Robert Gillen. Mario Natale and Jtyhn Miller and loads of Councilpersons 'and other dignitaries. The guests were interesting. The three most smashing outfits we saw were being worn by Mrs. Charles Daglt in aquarmarine linen. Mrs. James Busha in a hand-screened cotton print, and Council President Rachel Sloan in apriebt violle. TALKED TO Russ Wheatley, director of the ("treater Avalon 1st Annual Fishing Tournament, •because we wanted to know the results of 'the Ladifs Bluefishing Tournament sponsored by Lee Rogers of the Hook, line arid Sinker bait and tackle shop. Russ declared the contest a bonanza in every way. from the professionalism of .the angling to the good sportsmanlike conduct displayed by every entrant. Most boats returned unconteslable fishto the water The high-hook boat (one that caught pe most fish) was Phil Jubvski's Connie Jean withj>l; Se-_ cond highest-hook was Bar num Up Barnes run by Bob Runzer with 48, and there was a tie for third between Bill Tozour and Tom Tozour who each caught 43. TWo ladies tied for first place honors; Francine Sfl^vo and Sandy Finley eaai got 15 pounders * Dale Hocking took second with a 14Mi lb. and there was another tie for third when Ginny Olntrup and Madeiyn Tozour hooked 14 pounders. v DON'T FORGET it’s ^till not too late to enter the Greater Avalon’s 1st Annual Fishing Tournament. It has just reached the midpoint of the season. There are already such entries as honita, weak, blue arid flounder.
