391 LBS. BLUR MARLIN, caught aboard ‘Satan’s Lady' following 1-3/4 hour battle in Wilmington Canyon by the team of Cpts. Jim Emmanuel and Bill uarrhon Sr. and mate Bob Chmielewski.

This last weekend turned out to be one of th$ best yet for marlin and big blues and weakfish, but it was still spotty, and the weather wad unsettled to say the least. Some of the stories I didn't'have time to get in from t|ie week before was that on Saturday .Cpt. Don Murphy went out to the anchorage with "Cleaning” Keenan as mate, and theyfound weakfigh and flounder there for tbtir party; and then Ellery Bowman on Sunday found 30 big weakfish on his boat up in the little Egypt grounds. Ellery said theywent up to 5 lbs. and he had a wonderful trip. JOHN MANGANARAO of JM garage confirmed this spot. He took his new boat out there, and came back with 13 weakfish, and two of them went 9 lbs., according to John, the blue fish were there for the trollers too. Cpt. Walt Haas on the Hawser had a full box on Saturday, as did Cpt. Joey Drosey on the Miss Penfleld. » This weekend also saw a lot of big bluefish action as the Bluefish Bonanza put on by Sooth Jersey Fishing Center had 25 boats in competition. The Pipe Dream, captained by Rich DeSanto won it with a 13 lb. 10 oz. • blue; Second place went to 'the Rich L captained by Mike .Sullivan with a 13 lb. 3 oz. blue, and third place went to Uncle Coat captained by Bill Alexander with a

12 lb. 15 oz. jumbo. Fourth Prize was the Cobia III captained by George Bavst. TO GET BACK to the reports,! missed: The real jackpot on Sunday were the canyon boats. On Monday, Cpt. George Lewis on the Glass Machine had four white marlin release flags flying and a tuna flag. Jack & Keenan Osborne were out on the Red Beard and got two yellow fin tuna and a white marlin. Jack reported that he knew Scott Smith on,the Aquflfa had two whites in Baltimore Canyon, and that the Pipe bream ted four whites, and Len verity on the Linda Ruth registered his first white of the^season. Cpt. Gregg on the Arifinne had two whites also. August so far has been a good month for bill fish, and if the weather stays good, it should probably be the top bill fish part of the season. Several tournaments are going on, and as I get the releases I'll pass ^hem along. NO|W ON TO this wteek past. Understand Jack Osborne got one tuna on the Red Beard to keep that boat "hot,” but I don’t have much on the rest of the fleet. News on catches is sometimes hard to come by as some of the skippers get so busy that they can't communicate. I can report on ane catch, though, and that was Friday night. Lou Rodia,. Bob Neely, and I decided to try

a spot up the bay that Ralph Knlsell had told Lou about, and we found some nice weakfish, and a lot of small and medium sized flounder there. When the smoke cleared away we had 21 nice sized weakfish up to 4 lbs. in two hours of fishing, but we threw all the flounder back. . LOU AND BOB and I got a chance to reminesce and I got a chance to try out my new Loran C mi the Janie T VII. It was a beautiful evening! The next day L<hi and I took Joe Cannavo, Steve Cannavo, and Pete^ Avis of Philadelphhfup there. The sea was a little rougher, but we still got 17 nice weakfish With Joe winding the pool with a 4 pounder. We caught a lot more of those little flounder and returned them; and some spot, and a couple of oyster crackers. I couldn’t get over the many party boats fromFortescue around us with big parties on board, and they were all catching fish. It wasn’t easy fishing, but it was productive. These fellows were all good fishermen, and- they all caught fish.

I’LL BE GLAD to give anyone the Loran numbers of any place we’ve fished and caught fish. I don't mind sharing. I wish I could tell you more, but there’s a lot of secrecy about locations going on in Cape May, so I have a rough time getting news. We were using two- hook rigs baited with squid and shedder. Don Roseman told me that Cpt. Frank Cassedy, on the Lady Grace had 60 weakfish but he didn’t know where Cpt. Frank was fishing, because Cpt. Frank doesn't give out that recommendation. We got our shedders and squid at Joe Rodia’s, and it was real good bait. Joe goes all the way to Cnsfield, Md. for his shedders, and he’s got some real good weakfish squid. Last minute news flash: The first big blue of the season caught Saturday on The Satan's Lady was brought in to Soulh Jersey Fishing Center. Cpt. BUI Garrison Sr., veteran skipper, and Cpt. Jim Emmanuel teamed up with mate Bob Chmielewski to produce this fine catch.
