f Jersey Cape HISTORICALLY , by J.A. Cunningham
MODERN DAY VERSION of Jimmy the Kidd Rives instead of takes at least to those youngsters lucky enough to dig up his miniature treasurer chests and coins hidden on the beach on Cape May. Kids between 6 and 10 are invited to try their luck this Sunday. Meet up with the Kidd in front of ConvenUon Hall at I p.m. There are those whose families have lived in Cape May County for hundreds of years who say pirates buried treasure here, and there are maps which show where. If anyone has found. treasure—they aren’t telling. Letters, diaries and newspaper articles do show that pirates were a source of concern for the local landowners. Pirates often found their booty in the West Indies, and sailed up the Atlantic Coast. The bayside of the cape, with its natural inlets, safe harbors, fresh water and food supplies were attractive havens for seamen. Both Captain Teach (Blackbeard) and Captain Kidd are known to have spent time in the Cape May Point area. A large cedar tree i near Lake Lily was long called Captain Kidd’s tree. J.A. Cunmnghqm is co-author of the popular book on Jersey Cape history, Cape May County Story." \ frljll .11 !
