It’fc Time To Check Earnings
WILDWOOD - People in the Lower Township area who receive Social Security benefits who also work should take some time soon to review their earnings for this year, Delton Brooks. Social Security manager
here, said recently.
This review should hp made, Brooks said, so people will know where they stand in relation to Ihe annual earnings test. This test is the measure used to determine the amouni of benefits that should be paid a working beneficiarji. IN GENERAL, a person is due all benefits for a yeai if his or her earnings do noi exceed the annual exempt amount. For people under 65 all of 1961, the annual exempt amount is $4,080 and for people 65 and over any part of 1£81, the amount is
$5,500, Brooks said.
The general rule is that $1 in benefits is withheld for each $2 qf earnings above the annual exempt
amount—
A person who expects his or her earnings to exceed the annual exempt amount should notify Social Security so that the appropriate amount of benefits can be
withheld.
This way, the person carf avoid the possibility of having to repay any incorrectly paid benefits. BROOKS SAID that people should remwjibcr that gross wages, not take home pay, count for purpose of the annual earnings test. On the other hand, a person whose earnings are considerably less than he or she expected should also notify Social Security. In some such cases, benefits that were being 1 withheld could be started again. People who want more information should contact the Wildwood Social Security Office, 136 E Spicer Ave., telephone number 272-1111.
