Asst. Principal Hired

ERMA — Lower Cape May Regional Board of Education has finally obeyed a directive issued by the County Superintendent more than a yedr ago, and hired an assistant principal for the high school. At a special meeting last Tues, August 18, the Board, voted to? hire Thomas N. Turner as permanent assistant principaC at the high school beginning September 1. A 10-month per year position, the

salary is $19,500.

A graduate of bridgeton high school, he attended Lycoming college on a football scholarship for one year before transferring to Glassboro State where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B A. in Elementary Education. s After teaching in the Hopewell Township elementary schools outside Bridgeton for three years, he studied aX the University of Maryland where he received a masters degree in Education in 1980. WHILE AT the universi-ty-he worked as a research assistant in the Dept, of Education, Policy, Planning and Administration his primary .duty being to conduct legal research. He also served ato. ministrative intern Maryland's Prince George's County public schools; that position ufos in a middle school systems; Prior to coming to Lower Cape May Regional, Mr. Turner was employed by the Maryland State Dept, of Education as its Assistant director for Community Education Development. THE ONLY board member oppdsed to the appointment was Patricia Halbruner. She questioned why the job wasn't given to a local applicant — specifically calling to the

board’s attention that John Merrill, the acting assistant principal for the last year, and applied for the job. Superintendent Ephraim Keller said that all applicants for the position were certified — adding that beyond that, any discussion pertaining to specific individuals would have to take place in closed session. HE DID NOTE, however, that Mr. Turner had the recommendation of the board's Personnel Committee, high school principal Alan Beattie, and himself The Personal Committee had interviewed four candidates, including all qualifed local applicants The County Superintendent’s directive on the need for the assistant principal was based on student population guidlines under state T&E mandates.

City Bans Drinking In Public

NORTH WILDWOOD - A new ordinance aimed at slopping drinking on the streets was passed by the City Council last Tuesday. The ordinance prohibits the drinking of alcohol and the carrying open containers of alcohol in cars or in public places. The ordinance is intended to stop nuisance drinking on the streets and follows numerous complaints to the police earlier this season. Little opposition to the measure surfaced at the meeting although some, iouncflors and citizens were openly skeptical the oroinance could be enfoced witnbut restricting non-nuisance drifikers COUNCILMAN Robert Plum Said police should use “their common sense" when enforcing the ordinance.
