Jersey Cape HISTORICALLY by J.A. Cunnincham
INDIAN ARROW HEAD display at the Cape May County Museum. Fcw^i*, and fewer arrow heads are being unearthed today in the county where ounce they were fairly common — if you knew where to search. There are few reminders of the Lenni-Lcnape Indians who originally inhabited Cape May County. Many of the roads leading into Jlhe county from the Northwest generally follow the lines of the well-worn trails used by the aborigines to reach the seashore, although only the one still called Indian Trail, which crosses Route 9 from Anglesea, indicates it. Tuchahoe is an Indian name meaning—according to which authority you believe—bread; an area rich in edible roots; or where declare shy and hard to approach. Nummy's Island is named for an Indian called King Numm'y who figures in a number of local legends.
Cunningham is co author of the popular book on Jersey Cape history," Cape May County Story.''
