In the Union Cemetery in South Dennis is a monument commemorating one of Cape May County’s Revolutionary heroes, John Grace. Born probably in the North Dennis area, he enlisted in 1777 and was discharged in 1783, having participated in many battles including Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered ta Washington. When General Gates asked for a trust worthy man for a mission, General Washington sent John Grace with a letter saying, “This is my trusted scout, whom British gold cannot buy." Yiars after his death, children of Cape May County raised money to erect a suitable marker, which stands today.J.A.
