MILLVILLE Assemblyman Jarhes R Hprley, (R-Cumberland-Cape May) today voiced his support for the enforcement position adopted by both the Delaware 3ay dnd Atlantic Coast Shellfisherfes Councils and urged the New -Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to "fulfill Its promise of adequate protection." "When the law enforcement function was changed from the former DEP-run Marine Police to the State Police,'.* Hurley said, "the marme and shellfish businessmen were promised knowledgable and trained personnel with vessels to supervise, inspect, and enforce regulations.
c
•INSTEAD WHAT they have, as pointed out by the councils, is inadequate personnel and equipment to offer. any semblance of enforcemerit at all.” Hurley, .in a telegram, called on Donald Graham, Assistant Commissioner, NJDEP, "to a;ct im : mediately to fulfill Hie commitment made earlier
this year:
"This problem has been festering for several months.” Hurley said. "I’ve been kegt informed and have wished it closely hoping it would be resolved quickly and amicably between your<department and the fisheries councils." HURLEY URGED Grdham to use his office to fulfill the commitment that was made and is definitely
needed.
The Assembly Minority Leader said he agreed With Luther Jeffries Jr. and Steve Rotter, chairmen of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Coast ShelKisherieS Councils. "In my opinion, it’s a matter of not allocating the money properly," Hurley claimed. "Less than a year ago the NJDP wrangled a bill through the legislature placing boat feqs on small craft and increasing all other fees. It tripled the revenue raised and should be paying for the enforcement ind|ie shellfish area as well aMioater safety.”
