Seven Mile Beach M'Ellen Rowland 368-2294
CHRISTMAS is already on its way. If you've spent* many.yeitfs on the 7-Mile Beafch. you know the weeks preceding and following Labor Day are the perfect times to do all your shopping. Wfe have spent the last few days checking the shops out one by one to get the greatest end-of-the season bargains. In some cases the discounts are as much as 50%. If your list is short, you may even find the one thing you’ve coveted since Membrial Day is now affordable. The Christmas ornaments that nobody else will find anywhere are available here - rght now - and you‘11 get credit for your originality. Plan to Spend at least one dreary day in the shops instead of on the beach, and avoid the December crowds. We promise it will save you big bucks. THE AVALON ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3rd, was the shortest in anyone’s memory. The first action was unanimous approval for withdrawal 'if the Sasdelli application to place solar panels in their rear yard at 4571 Ocean Dr. Next was Charles Ballinger’s application to enlarge the kitchen of his home at 35 W. 10th St. to permit extension of a nonconforming use. There were no objections and this also passed unanimously. Finally, Clifford Lord of 6365 Dune Dr., sought approval to extend the back of his house 16 fefet. Again, there being no objections, the addition was unanimoysly approved. Tom Marvel, speaking for the Avalon Home and Landowner’i Asso., commended the Board on its wisdom and unanimity of decisions. • J\* AT ITS SEPT, g Council * Meeting, the Borough of Stone Harbor approved $7,500 in Bond Anticipation Notes for the rehabilitation of sewers and $480,000 in the bulkhead recons true tion at 127th St. In other business it was revealed that a petition has been circulated and signed requesting the cessation of tennis tournaments. It was
agreed by Council that future parking lots shall be required to have landscaping (preferably on a small ' scale) between the fencing and the sidewalk. They must also be lighted. Resident Andy Shrodef complimented the Police Dept, on their prompt answer to a call reporting the destruction of snow fence and the apprehension of the alleged parties involved. It was also noted that ALL boats measuring 12’ and over must now be registered. This is a recent regulation of which many boaters are still unaware. WE STOPPED OVER to see Erin Preston of Linden Lane to inquire about Frances (Mrs. Albert) Brown, her neighbor, who broke her arm in a bizaare accident a few weeks ago. Frances is the human dynamo who, last year, made $1,500 for her chui'ch, St. John’s Episcopal, Ridley Park, by creating the little clowns that are the current rage. She makes them to order or simply from materials donated by friends. Frances is noted for two things — a constant smile and ever-busy hands. She took time out on her birthday to celebrate with buddies at a weekly jam session at Spfingfield Inn in S I C. When she did a solo highland fling the Emcee asked her why she was so happy. “I’m celebrating getting Medicare," was the reply. Frances gave one more exhuberdnt fling, slipped and fell on her arm. The rapid swelling of her hand revealed she. had hurt herself more than she realized. A consultation with Dr. Warren MacDonald, the orthopedic surgeon, revealed that an operation and the insertion of two metal pins was required. Despite the cast, she still manages to sew. The cast and piiuf were to be removed Sept. 14th. Her present this year couldn’t havd. been more appropriate. \ Erin had an Weresting tale to tell about herself. She and a friend wer^having dinner at the Windrift the other night. An attrac-

live couple was seated at the next table and the man atiked Erin if she would be offended if he were to ask "her some questions: She was curious and agreed. The questions were political and the ensuir discussion interesting. About halfway thru El... said “What’s this all about? Are you going to write this down?" The nice interrogator said "yes, probably. I am & pollster, and while I am not interested in your names I am very much interested in your answers.” He then graciously thanked them for their cooperation and sent them an after-dinner cordiale. This piqued our interest and we’re going to haunt the Windrift (he said he is frequently there). There is nothing more fun than offering solicited input.
You can depend on the Marines.
