Seek Aid To Study ‘Fin Rot’
COURT HOUSE’ - Fishermen ,are asked to help marine biologists in studying '.'fin Rot’’, three cases of which were fund in weakfish caught ' in Delaware Bay in May, . ‘‘Fin rot" is a condition in which the skin between the rays recedes and the spines are exposed. Fish rfiay also show ulcerations or sores on'their bodies. Researchers f stress. that these skin conditions do not affect the quality of the fish's flesh, but do feduce
its market value.
WHILE THIS year's occurrence seems tb be an isolated incidence,
biologists at
Marine Fishery 1 Sandy Hook want
identify the cause of the condition. Anyone who lands fish with the condition are asked tonotify the Cooperative Extension Service of the N.J. Marine Advisory Service here, the DEP- Bivalve Office, or
NMFS.
THE ADVISORY service also reports that a few maps on fishing areas in the state have been prepared by Bill Figley 6f the state DEP to use in advising the . federal government about potential impacts of ’ offshore energy development. Unfortunately, there will
National— probably. be only a few
maps available for DEP and extension offices
