Last weekend was really a fooler ! Here it was Labor Day weekend, and all the predictions were for heavy seas in the ocean, and rain everywhere. J guess th<? weathermen who looked at the weather coming from the West saw it that way, bOt it certainly didn't turn out that way. Friday afternoon was beautiful in the Bay, arid the Ocean was

flounder* were two to four pounds — I saw them! Don Roceman told me Capt. Frank had more of the same on Thursday, so the Bay & still producing. I look for some real good Bay weakfishing, and some excellent surf fishing in the next few weeks. One more report: Capt. David Roseman sent word from' Oregon that the scalloping is very good. He's coming horn in October, and going hunting. I sure liope he saves some time off for next drum season. We need hirp on the Top Drawer II to^ind those humpbacks! ^Stay tuned to this column and I'll bring you the results next week on the Cape MaJ Co.4latteras Anglers-Ava-lori C. of C. surf dournament, and the catches from the tournament of champi6ns in the “World Reties of Billfishing" put on by the South Jersey Fishing Center. The Golden Days of Fall are fast approaching arid fishing will be improvv ing each week...

very rough, but some of the Ocean boats went out in the Bay, and got some nice weakfish. Capt. Joey Drosey, on the Miss Pen-. field was out there, and got 70 nice weakfish on the edge of the "Punk grounds." Capt. Jim Delaney, who runs the Barbara, and I talked it over, and decided that we’d meet at Roseman’s Boat Yard in the morning between 8:30 and 9, and see how the weather was. Capt. Joey had left his loran C numbers from the' day before, so when we got up and found it calm. I picked up some shedder crabs/at Joe Rodia's, and at\ 9 o’clock we left on the Janie TVII to try to catch some weakfish. Bob Neely had also got some nice weakfish on Friday on the inshore side of the 60 foot slough, so'we felt we had a good chance. WE ARRIVED ON the numbers about 10 o’clock, and Jim started things off with a real nice weakfish . about 3 pounds ; then I got a medium sized weakfish, and Jim got a 4 poundbeauty — as time passed a big fleet was building up offshore as a lot pf the Ocean boats showed up, because the Ocean was still rough. When we headed Tbr the bam that day Jim and I had caught 22 weakies and 12 flounders, but I’ve got to admit that Capt. Jim outfished me. Capt. Tom Roberts, on the My Gal was offshore of us thatday, and got 75 weakfish and flounder for his party. The Salt Shaker from Roseman’s with Capt. Joe Hughes, and Bill and Pierre Belong!, and Nate High, and I decided to go back to the same spot, and that day we got 20 weakfish and 20 flounder for a beautiful day of fishing. Capt. Jim Delaney was high hook again, but Capt Nate ran him for a close second. There were a lot of , fish tales on that trip, but Capt. Nate topped us ^11 with one about catching 9 red drum when he was sailing parties off Norbury’s landing. Capt. Charlie Schaefer Jr„ who runs the Starfish.
bulent seas caused by Hurricane Emily, but Sunday they had a big catch on their night trips. Charles Smith, of Philadelphia, was high hook with 122 snapper blues. Capt. Charlie said daytime fishing had been producing fluke, weakfish, and snapper blues. \ The Starfish will be sailing daily at 8 a.m. during Sept, and October. She will also be running nights through S6pt., and weekends through October. Well, on Labor Day Jack Osborne, Capt. Don Murphy. and I finally got off on a trip to the canyon on the Red Beard. Jack had picked Baltimore, and it was a good choice because at 11:15 Capt. Don hooked and released a nice white marlin while I was taking my turn at the wheel. Later on in the afternoon Jack was running the boat, and Don got another shot at a white, but it was on a green machine, and it jumped off after a short run, so we had 1 for 2 which isn’t a bad percentage. SOME OF THE OTHER Cape May boats headed for Poor Man’s Canyon, and the action was good there too. The 921 captained by Roger Derbyshire came back with 2 whites, as did Capt. Scott Smith on the Aqullla — Capt. Jay Beecroft on the 9 G’s was flying flags for 2 whites and a dolphin, but I don’t know what canyon he was in. Lat>or Day weekend turned out to be a terrific time for fishing both in the Bay, and in the canyons; and in on the 30 fathom line they were talking about catching yellow firi tuna. Now, for one last Report: Capt. Frank Cassedy, on the Lady Grace was fishing a party from Maryland on Wednesday, and came back with 34 weakfish and 24 flounder.
