Funding For Vets’ Cemetery Pushed
.WILDWOOD - Rep. James J. Florio, the Democratic nominee for governor, today urged the appropriation of $150,000 by the state to underwrite planning and site preparation over a 10-year period for a new veterans' cemetery in New Jersey. In an address to the annual state convention of the American Legion here, Florio commended legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Herman Costello (D-Burlington) to create a new veterans cemetery in New Jersey and called for implementation of plans for site development. “IT'S A SMALL enough price to pay by those of us who have bendfitted from the peace and security won on foreign battlefields' by our American servicemen,” Florio said. "It is only fitting that we provide oilr veterans with a final resting place near to their homes and'surviving families.” ) Florio explained that a new veterans cemetery in New Jersey is necessary because the present national military cemetery in Beverly, Burlington County, has reached its capacity. Currently, the nearest cemeteries for interment of remains of New Jersey veterans are in Maryland or New York State. Costello’s legislation provides for the transfer of a parcel of land owned by the
State Department of Corrections in. North Hanover Township in Burlington County to the State Department of Human Services
for development as a veterans' f cemetery. The appropriation is necessary to begin th^ site planning and preparation.
