Comeback Season For 'Brant

1 v Sands League Champs

TRENTON - The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed New Jersey’s waterfowl hunting seasons for 1961-82. And, for the first time in a good number of years, there will be a season for the Atlantic Brant. The brant season had been closed to New Jersey hunters for eight of the last nine years mainly because of severe winter mortality which resulted in low populations. However, said the NJ Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, populations along, the Atlantic Flyway last winter increased to more than 100,000 birds:' • THIS PAST SEASON, the division said, Arctic weather conditions were ideal for nesting and more than 30 percent of the birds in the fall migration of both brant and gnow geese will be young. The division said it expects brant populations to exceed 130,000 birds, and more than 230,000 snow geese are expected. The brant season will be from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31, and again from Nov. 26 through Dec. 17. The snow goose season runs from Oct. 2nd through Oct. 31, and again from Nov. 7 through Jan. 5. THE CANADA GOOSE is also doing well in New Jersey. The Division said last winter’s population exceeded one million birds in the Atlantic Flyway, and that local flocks are expanding arid* now breed throughout the state. The division predicted that excellent populations of Canada Geese, snow geese and brant will migrate through and winter in New Jersey during the coming waterfowl season. Duck production, the division reported, was not so good because of severe drought conditions in the prairie pothole country of Canada. These conditions once again have caused the postponement of the canvasback duck season. The division said there will be no season for canvasbacks until breeding cotiditions substantially improve. Other duck seasons are similar to last years. ZONING FOR THE setting of waterfowl seasons will continue for a stfcond experimental year. Slight modifications were made to include portions of the Delaware River in the south zone.
