Avalon Gets The Fever
AVALON - 109 youngsters took part here in a two-day soccer clinic sponsored by the Avalon Chamber of Commerce and the Philadelphia Pever soccer team August 26 and 27. Fever stars “Doc Lawson, Dave (Big 'Mac Attack) McWilliams and Ed Sheridan ran the clinic. The program ended with each age group participating in the new "Sidekick Soccer" game
sponsored nationwide by. McDonald^. According to Ernie Yarborough, Chamber Vice President, the number of participants was so good that next year the clinic will be held 5 days. January 23,1982 has been designated "Avalon Day at the Fever." A youth team from the borough will participate in a preliminary game at the Spectrum against a team from Pennsylvania.
Birdbrain (From Page 34) "Thank God," said another. "But just a minute,” I said. "I don’t understand this." "Neither do we,” said one of the former workers. "But I’ll tell you this too, the same day we lost our jobs, milk at our kid’s school weht from a nickle to fifteen cents. Lunch went up to," he added. "WAIT A MINUTE," I said feeling their anger. "Are you telling fne that your president not only cut out your jobs but forced milk and lunch prices up at the school. Why would a president do such things? Isn’t he the same president that proposed additional spending to develop a neutron bomb?" I asked. "We only have one president," said one man "Thank God," said another. 0 "Not only that," continued the former CETA employee, "but this is just the beginning! There will be a lot more cuts once the budget slashes are implemented. Much of the funding for various programs runs out the end of September It may take a few months before the full impact is felt," he added. The men sat on the bulkhead. "Be glad you're a bird," said one man kindly. ' I sat there with them looking at the ocean. I hoped the birdbrain in Washington didn’t cut that back like he v^as cutting everything else. I thought about things)for a long time and then I spoke. "BUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN when the people have no money to spend or to pay their bills. How will the big money people survive? It would seem the cutbacks on the poor working people will have an effect on the big money. It may take a year but it does seem inevitable. Doesn’t birdbrain think of those things?" I asked. The three men looked at me and then realized the bird brain inference. One of them moved closer and then laughed. "Hey fella, we didn't mean to insult you. Actually if our president had your brain we’d be in pretty good shape. We’ll have to think of another word ” "How about "no brain" I said wisely. NEXT WEEK: Daylight Savings Farmland Bond Issue (From Page 34) # ment bond question on this November’s ballot there is a glimmer of hope for the state that was named for its garden-like atmosphere, but which is no rhore than 20 per cent farmland today. AMONG OTHER THINGS, this bond would provide for 50 per cent matching grants to counties and municipalities to buy development "easements" from farmland owners, paying the difference between the land’s value as pure real estate and its value as farmland. , With this capital in hand, a farmer could invest the cash and use the money, instead of the land itself, as collateral for his periodic operating and improvement loans. When and if he chose to sell, the buyer would get a bargain price in return for the restricted deed that would allow only farming on the land. It just might work. It deserves a try.
