AVALON Russel Wheatley, public affairs officer of Avalon Flotilla 86 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has announced the Fall Safe Boating classes. Classes will be held at the Wetland Institute, Stone Harbor Blvd., starting 7:30 p.m Thursday, Oct. 1, and continuing each Thursday thereafter. The course is known as “Boating Skills and Seamanship'”, and will run for 13 weeks. Some of the subjects covered in the "course are Sale. Boat Handling. Legal Requirement Rules of the
Road, Aids to Navigation!Marine Engines, Piloting,\ Marlin Spike Seamanship, Sailing. Weather, Radio Telephone and Locks and Dams. THE WETLANDS INSTITUTE offers its facilities as a public service to the Flotilla for the purpose of conducting these classes. The instructors for the course are from Flotilla 86 and Division VIII. USCG Aux. They are John Richardson, Captain Divi\ sion VIII; Harry Juckett, Vice Captain Division VIII; Blanche Somers, Commander Flotilla 86; Jim- ■ Ristine. Vice Commander Floltilla 86; Dare Robinson. Staff Officer. Operations; Joe Somers, Division Staff Officer, Public Education; Russ Wheatley. Staff Officer, Public Affairs. Other instructors from Flotilla 86 are Horace Griffith, William Schaeffer and Dorothy Storkley. UPON COMPtteTION Of the course sfu£nls are given certificates, which enables them to obtain boat insurance at a 10 percent discount from mbst companies. This year to date the Flotillas has conducted three safe boating courses and one course on Sailing, qpith approximately 75 students receiving'completion certificates. IN ADDITION TO public education, the Flotilla is actively engaged in "The Courtesy Motor Boat Examination” (CME) Program This service is available to the public at no charge. It entails .a thorough examination of the vessel, making sure all legal requirements^ are
met.
If a vessel fails to meet all requirements, a list of the discrepencies is given to the boatq^vner. No report of sucIWiscrepancies is submitted to any authorities. If and when such failures are corrected the decal is then awarded. Other activities that the Flotilla participates in are “Safety Patrols” and ’’Search and Rescue." The Flotilla strongly urges the boating community of Cape May County to take full advantage of the services provided by The United States
CAPE MAY - The Winner of the city’s First Annual Quadrathon was Dan O’Malley of the Avalon Beach Patrol, whp started out by capturing the rowing nace in a time of 4 minutes
and 5 seconds.
He enhanced his overall lead by placing second in the swimming event behind Ocean City’s Bernie Farley. All competitors faced very rough v^wa ter conditions caused by^the strong winds and current. Dspite the poor conditions there were no accidents. THE 14 participants bolted two six-mile lap* around and through Cape May and West Cape May in less than 40 minutes in the bicyle race. The winner was Mike Regan of North Wildwood Beach Patrol, in 37 minutes and 9 seconds. Second place went to Dan O’Malley and his brother Steve O’Malley garnered
third place.
Thirteen of the 14 started
the six-mile run, but only 12 were able to finish.’Regan again crossed ' the finish lirie first. Dan O'Malley finished third as he followed second place finisher Joe Cunningham of the Villas across the finish. MIKE REQAN finished second overall, Bernie Farley third, Scott Alessi of the Cape May Beach Patrol took fourth, IJilly Fox from Ship Bottom nailed down fifth, , and Steve O’Malley and Rick Greco of Wildwood tied for sixth. J[eanne -Peckiconis, the lone female participantfinished a vgry fine eight overall. The top six finishers were awarded trophies following the running event by Terry Brown of the City’s Civic Affairs Department. He, with Buzz Mogck, superintendent of Cape May Beaches, and Phil Rogers of Philadelphia organized and coordinated the entire event.
