This last week was dominated by northeast winds and heavty seas; and as the colder air in the different fronts passing over our area was felt, you suddenly realized summer was over. Fishing slowed down almost everywhere except at the tbp'of the week when Opt. Dan Guns on the Hun tri/a, fishing under the beach near the target buoys, happened upon some nicekweakfish. He and his mate were cleaning 25 nice weakies as I passed by ori my way to Cpt. Sal Sorace’s Five Star to relive the boating of that 550 lb. blue marlin. A COUPLE OF days later Cpt. Dan went back to the same place just to prove that it wasn’t luck and caught another nice mess of troytt (weakfish); then he moved up about two miles north of the spot, and started catching flounder in the 2 to 4 lb. category. He also picked up some weakfish, and quite a few 4 lb. blues. All during the week Cpt. •‘Randy" taudeman and Cpt. Donald Roseman were out netting along the beachfront, and Just about filled Randy’s Sea Ox with bluefish, weakfish, kingfish, croakers, and Cape May goodies. WHAT DOES all this mean? Well, to my feeble mind I would think that Cpt. Dan had located some good fishing again, and that Cpt. Randy and Cpt. Donald had also found the same thing. It also means that the northeastern and the water temperature have forced the good angling species inshore, and that by weekend they should be showing in Close. In short, our fishing scene is changing into a fall pattern, and as the Golden Days of autumn continue we are going to experience a change in our angling here on the Jersey Cape. THE CANYON runs are about over for this year (although some were made last weekend) and ocean fishing should come into its own in the inlets, and not far offshore. Surf fishing should start producing too, and over in the Bay we can still expect a lot of good fikhing in four fathom slough. There’s still a lot of good fishing left (if the weather codperates)), but it will be a little different from now

THE BIGGEST white marlin this year is flanked by the crew of the "Healer Dealer’’ out of Atlantic City. The % lb. marlin was caught by Larry Deuber, commodore of the Atlantic City Yacht Club. It won the white marlin category in South Jersey Fishing Center’s Tournament of Champions.

On Friday the weather started to moderate, and Cpt. Frank Cassedy on the Lady Grace took a party up around Hereford Inlet, and came back with a nice, catch of weakfish. Saturday, Cpt. Jim Delany and I got out. early, and headed up that way. As we left the inlet at Cold Spring the sun was just peeping over the horizon, and as we rode north towards Hereford we found we weren’t the only ones out there. Trawlers were spread across the horizon, and were already hard at work. WE ARRIVED on the south side of Hereford and found Cpt. Rill Garrison fishing a party on the Bet Bill, ahd bailing weakfish. We started drifting on his pattern, and Jim caught the first fish. The action was fast and furious, as we took turns catching fish, and then Jim got a double header. As we drifted along we'd run out of weakies, and started catching real small blues, then we returned to the start of our drift and start catching

weakies again. Joe Roop, on the Wow Joined us, and for awhile the action slowed, but then ^Joe found them again, and we started catching fish again. Fred Maurer and his wife Jeanne, on the Reel Fun joined us, and we all caught weakies for a time, and then it really slowed as the fleet built up. WHEN THE smoke . cleared away, Jim and I had 40 weakfish, and our trip home was exciting, as we threaded our way through the fleet with the

help of Milt from Rosemans leading us — but that’s another story.. Last Week the Sun trossed th€ line, and the wind was blowing Northwest, so that means that next season will experience the same type of weethe^ pattern we’ve been-getting this year. QN (KT. 8TH the Cape May Co -Hatteras Anglers v are having theic annual fall . meeting down at the Winchester in Cape May for .the purpose of planning their fall trip to the Outej - Banks of North Carolina, so I guess you can say that fall is upon us. and winter is beckoning in the background. There should be some good bluefishing and s striper fishing coming up. and those weakies should be in the inlets for a couple of weeks. Get out ]fr?rc whenever you can.^The season is winding down, but watch the weather. * because the sea tends to get heavy in.the later months. The season's ninth hurricane, Irene, is heading towards the coast and is dangerous Lets hope we will be lucky again P.S.— The only marlin I heard of Saturday was on the Red Beard Jack Osborne told me that he and Cpt. Don Murphy raised one and had him on for about four minutes before he jumped off.
