COURT HOUSE - Volunteer programs give individuals the chance to be of service and at the same time use their own special talents. Jean Somers, head of the Volunteer Services, a department of Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, says "Each year the department expands, but due to the ‘comings and goings' as well as expansion within fc the hospital, we always have a need for more volunteers ’’ VISITORS ANT) PATIENTS being admitted to the hospital are welcomed' first hand by volunteprs. ' Mrs. Betty Chinn, who has been a volunteer at Burdette Tomlin for years, is still serving despite several heart .attacks and temporary loss of sight in one eye. Mrs Chinn says, "I like the personal contact I help feed patients, take them to X-ray or admissions or discharge. It ijT a way I can visit many people who may not have visitors at all. No matter how I feel, I know I'm better than someone who has to be there in bed.” MRS. WILLIAM FISHER stopped in to shy she would help out once in awhile but' was retiring from ' Volunteer Servicfe after 15 years and 3,500 ' hours of service. Volunteers for the Hospital used to come from the Hospital Auxiliary but when the demand increased in 1974, the ’ Volunteer Service becan|e a department of the hospital and a director was hired. SOME VOLUNTEERS prefer not to be involved with direct patient contact, so they are assigned to

visitor control and also J . help various departments With typing and, filing Others have the job of transporting blood to and from The Americah Red Cross Blood Depot in Pleasantville. Monies raised through thlp Cheeri Corner, contain ing the Gift and Coffee Shops, and the Et Cetera Shop go 19 the Auxiliary , fund to make possible the 'purchase of needed hospital equipment THERE IS ALWAYS a need for volunteers, even though there are approx ima'tely 300 registered "Volunteers are needed • everyday of the week and for some, assignmenU in tiur evening. Hours start at 9 a m and continue until 8 p m with volunteers working three or four-hour shifts Weekends, Cheeri- ■ Corner hours are It a m. to 4 p m. and I,obby hours 1 to 4 p.m Hospital departments heeding’help at the moment are Central Supply. Physic^ Therapy, Nursing Wings and the Business Office. For information or to volunteer, call the hospital at 465-2000 or stop in to see Somers.
