Over Social Security

wrote the PreSidenC The Millville Republican informed Mr. Reagan that he had been moved to his first letter to a President "beea'4e of the concern, fear and panic I am receiving from

my constituents.

"PLEASE RECONSIDER your intention to reduce or change Social Security benefits,” Hurley’s letter continued. "In my opinion, you are destined to fail because the people, those governed, want thdse benefits left as they are." In his Letter to the President. Mr. Hurley enclosed a copy of "one of the letters of genuine concern" that the Assemblyman had received from a consti- ' tuent. "What answer do I give this woman?" he asked of Mr. Reagan. Hurley revealed his letter to the President during a recent interview ^vith the Herald and Lantern. Here i^the question and Mr. Hurley’s response (which was deleted from last week’s polifical interviews because of space limitotions): •Under pressure from members of his own party. President Reagan abandoned plans to cut into Social Security as part of his federal budget paring. As a fellow Republican who is also running for election, what would have been your advice to

the President?

HURLEY: As a rpatter of fact, I wrote him my advice — first time in my life I ever wrote a Presidtfnt When I sauf that, I wrote him a lettei^.' I urged him to aban don any kind of conversation about Soaal Security cuts becajge he could not win me battle. There is no question in my mind —\ and he shouldn’t win the battle. The issue is so charged with fear in the minds of those people who°are either receiving Social Security benefits or in line to receive them soon, that panic would have gripped our nation. I just said to him: -You will have your

Alluding to Sheets’ proposals to expand on the duties of the Sheriff’s Dept., Fox said his opponent’s "lack of specific project structure or manpower and costs to the taxpayers proves the lack of substance associated with his pie-in-the-sky rhetoric tailored to appeal to a crime-concerned public." THE SHERIFF also accused his challenger of lacking the courage of his convictions, and weakness which, Fox maintained, "has been demonstrated by’ his fear of debating pie during this campaign after having thought it was a good idea to challenge me in the first place. "Now after preliminary agreements to the concept by several members of the media, my opponents running the other way as fast as he can," Fox asserted. "Is that how he would handle things in the face of adversity or in a life and death situation at the county jail?" The sheriff concluded: "I’m still available to debate one on one and eyeball to eyeball, but I don’t think Ralph Sheets has the stomach for it.’-’

And all of your victories to date| which I applaud, would be lost — becausk-^mu could not win the Social Security fight. There are just some things that you learn in’ politics — and he’s a lot smarter than I am — you don’t tackle. My old friend Mead Louis fwho'work? for Hurley and^who is thfr grandson of Charles K-. Fire Investigated

OCEAN CITY - Police and fire officials here hope to know by week’s end whether last Friday’s fire that gutted a three-story furniture warehouse owned by the family of City councilman Herbert Brqwnlee was arson. Five firefighters, including chief Robert^Hart, were injured fighting the suspicious, blaze which destroyed much of the furniture and other contents of the building. Although fire officials say the building is structurally sound and could be used again, the councilman hasn’t decided if he will restore it. The first floor had been used to house a tv repair shop and store merchandise for Brownlee’s retail store qn Asbury Ave. The remainder'of the bulding was used to house additional merchandise for the store and provide storage space for individual renters
