You fhould ha've been here yesterday! That’s what came over the radio, and that was really the story Saturday foV NateHigh, Jim Delaney and I. All week long we’d been hearing about catches of weakfish from Townsends Inlet south, and just when it looked like the wind would slacken off a little, it popped around from the Northeast, and changed the wbol§ ocearr picture. We did get eleven founder and three weakfish so we weren't skunked, but it was a different baligame from what we had planned. * During the week there were some real good catches from the surf, deorge Shute, or "Shutey” as most of us know him, got fifteen 3^ to 4 lb. blues out«of the surf at Townsends at the first of the week. Charlie Canti of Green Creek was* surfing on North Wildwood with ■ his wife, And she caught an 8 lb. weakfish in the surf, while Charlie was catching some nice blues. Jim Dayi> of Stone Harbor had two 8 lb. blues in the ■ Stone Harbor surf. ALL WEEK LONG there have been boats laying

under the beach because of the Northwest winds, and they were catching nice weakfish. Don Laricks of Sea Isle was telling me Wednesday night at the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce installation dinner that the night before he had gotten fifteen 5 lb. weakies inshore from a boat on the Avalon side of Townsends Inlet. The Ndrthwest wind made the bay unfishable, but under the beach, and in the surf on the ocean side had you believing that the water was full of fish. On Saturday, though, it was a different story — most of the weakfish disappeared, but flounder bit well, and everybody seemed to be picking up a few. THE ONE exception was Bltl, Tozour on the Eight T’j. 'About 10 in the morning he announced he was catching 10 to 15 lb. blues at the Sea Isle lump, and boatesfrom as far away ati Atlantic City were asking him for the Lorgn C numbers. Bill called them out, and I imagine frotn what we heardJpter that a nice catch of slammers saved the day for some of the trolling boats.

It’s Avian Showtime On the Jersey Cape

The annual fall bird migration is nearing its peak now throughout the Garden State, and the N.J. Div. of Fish, Game & Wildlife is urging nature lovers to “catch a once-a-year treat as thousands of migratory birds pause here on the way to their winter grounds.” Jersey Cape residents and visitors are especially fortunate because the Cape provides some of the best b rding opportunities in the nation, notes the FGiW Division. V THE HIGHBEfe BEACH Wildlife Management Area, at the end of New England Rd. just south of the Cape May Canal in Lower Township, contains one of the state’s last major dune woodland areas. Located on the Delaware Bay, it is considered by the National Wildlife Federation to be one of the most important sports for birds in the nation. The area is particularly noted for having large oumbers of warblers and raptors.

Other Jersey Cape areas offering excellent opportunities to view birds which are passing through include nearby Cape May Point State Park (adjacent to the lighthouse), and the famed Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary (the only heronry in the nation sponsored by and located within a municipality — between 111th and 117th Sts. on the Ocean Hwy). AND THOSE WHO enjoy birding are not alone, points out the Fish & Game people, who report that a recent state survey indicates birdwatching is the 12th most popular outdoor recreational activity, including sporting events. The Garden State’s wide range of habitat together with its location along the great Atl^ntip Flyway makes it a natural resting sport for migratory birds, and hundreds of thousands of southbound birds will be streaming thru the marshes, fields and forests during the next several weeks, points out the Fish, Game, & Wildlife Div.

busters from the surf or on the soals, and it will be interesting, because every trip so far has been different. Some of our group will fly down, and some of will drive beach buggys down, and we’ll be tiding to keep our legend alive. The natives call us the boys from Jersey that love to catch Red Drum ONE MORE last minute news flash. Jack Osborne and Cpt. Don Murphy on the Red Beard got in one more tuna trip on Saturday. but the changing wind rhessed them up too. Jack said he had to try it one

more time to make sure the Canyon season was over for this year, and now he’s satisfied, They’ve sure hdd a bahner year in 1981, and it won’t be too long till next year. Paul’ Hoffman, Tony Vistenzo. and Jim Godfrey were busy organizing a surf group to fish the North Wildwood beach during the Hatteras anglers meeting, and Charlie Glenn was giving them some helpful tips. See you next week, with some more stories on our Cape of Nature, and I hope the wind lays down, so we can find the fish

Save Fuel Dollars

If the wind lays down for awhile, we ought to have some terrific fishing in the ocean and the bay. ON THURSDAY night the Cape May CountyHatteras Anglers held their , annual fall banquet down at the Winchester in Cape May, and 25 members'and guests attended. There were-so many fish storiep at that meeting, and they were so good that I could have filed 10 coluihns with the catches, but I’ll just work one in every now and then from now on. Bill Halbruner was elected president, replacing Jack Osborne who had served the club well in ‘80-81. Walt Hendee was elected vice president replacing Bill, and-I con-

tinued on as secretarytreasurer. The club is now going into its 25th year, and a lot of fishermen have come and gone in that time It was originally formed by a group of us who loved black drum fishing here in Cape May County, and red drum fishing in Hatteras. OVer the years a host of real good anglers have belonged, and helped make the legend of the red and black jackets possible here, and in Hatteras. THIS YEAR about 12 of the members plan to make the fall tfjp. Before we leave I’ll name them, but I’ve run out .of space this week. We’ll be staying at the Atlantic View hotel, and trying to land one of those bronze backed tackle
