Recycling Need Cited
STONE HARBOR - The importance of the solid waste recycling plan now under way was stressed by Diane DeMeo, county trash recycling coordinator, at the recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. • Many communities have helped cut the mounting costs of trash disposal by source separation, she said. A survey has revealed' that 20 to 25 percent of the county's solid waste is potentially recyclah|le. and that there is a large market for glass, newsprint and aluminum in the South Jersey area. THE SUCCESS of this operation, first started in Mpdisoir? Wic. jn 1968, depends heavily on the cooperation of residents and merchants. DeMeo said.. Source separation in the borough will be started Monday, Oct. 19.

STONE HARBOR - Effective Monday, Oct. 19, the borough will star! recycling glass and newspapers as part of the county Municipal Utilities Authority’s program. In embarkingjon this program Stone' Harbor becomes the first of nine municipalities in the county to separate glass and newspapers from the remainder of each ^household’s refuse. These items will be placed in separate containers and put with the regular trash for pickup on the usual col-
lection day.
ALL NEWSPAPERS, not magazines, should be bundled and tied with string or stacked and placed in plastic bags to keep them dry. Clear, green and brown glass containers shoufd be placed in a marked reuseable plastic or metal container. Their lids, metal rings and lables need not be removed. This recycling program will start in the other eight municipalities in early November and on a countywide basis in 1983. The recycled materials, newspapers and glass, will be sold, with some of the profits being returned to the locals municipalities
based on the amount of tortnage each collecte/1 However, the ^biggest benefit to each municipality is that recycling reduces the amount of solid waste to be dumped in a landfill, enabling the landfill to be used over a longer period of
time.
Mayor James G. Wood urges all residents v to cooperate with the borough by taking the time to separate the recycling items specific instructions on the manner to handle these items will be sent to all households before the program starts.
