Evacuation Plan Cited By Salmon

MILLVILLE - In a speech, recently, Edward H. Salmon, State Senate candidate from Cum-berland-Cape May, explained the joint emergency evacuation plan of the two counties. The plan, believed to be the first of its kind in tbe state, provides for a quick, safe evacuation from one county to the other in case

of disaster.

Salmon, a Cumberland County Freeholder, was instrumental in setting up the mutual aid plan. A summer resident of Ocean City, candidate Salmon was 6ne of thousands forced to flee Hurricane Belle in 1976. At that time no mutual aid plan exited and many motorists found themselves waiting in long lines on the Garden State Parkway, knowing of nowhere to go. SALMON-WORKING WITH Cape Freeholder Ralph Evaris, Cape Emergency Management Director Lyndon Summerman, and Cumberland Emergency Management Coordinator John Hoffman — developed a plan to avoid any such future

problems.

Under the plan, in case of a hurricane up to 100,000 persons from Cape May would evacuate into Cumberland County and to various evacuation shelters there. Evacuees would be sheltered in schools which have cafeterias. The plan also calls for evacuating the

small bayside communities like East Point #nd Thompson’s Beach. These people would also be housed in schools. THE MUTUAL AID PLAN is not entirely oneway. Cape May County is prepared to accept Cumberland residents, in ^case' of a disaster threatening from the west, such as a nuclear accident at power plants near the Delaware River. Salmon has been highly praised for his part in formulating the joint emergency evacuation plan and cites it as an example of the type of mutually beneficial work he would do if elected in November. "This, plan shows that our two counties can work together when given the proper leadership", Salmon said. "Our counties have much in common." SALMON IS PROUD that the plan is a pioneering idea in the state. "For to long the legislature has looked to Northern New Jersey to provide our leadership. We need to show them that South Jersey is the place to look for innofative ideas," Salmon said. "If elected in Ovember, I promise to pursue programs and policies which, like our evacuation plan, will mutually aid the residents of Cumberland and Cape May counties, as well as the residents of New Jersey as a whole."
