Kean Seen Home Rule Champion * MILLVILLE f - Assemblyman James Hurley, the Republican candidate for State Senate, sees the concept of Home Rule not as a battle between North Jersey and South Jersey, but as a basic political difference between big city Democrats and small town
Republicans.
And while he doesn't like . to dwell on South Jersey being shortchanged by actions in the state capital, Mr. Hurley does emphasize that Tom Kean, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, has said he wil!, if elected, overcompensate in key state appointments to South Jersey residents. THE SENATE candidate’s views v on Home Rule and the IVorth vs. South dichotomy were elicited during a recent Herald Lantern political interview. What follows are the parts of his responses which had to be cut from the interview story due to •space limitations: Mr. Hurley believes* Home Rulers stronger in rural and 4 suburban New Voll Pushes TV Service COURT HOliJSE - Michael J Voll, Democratic candidate for Middle Township Cornmit■tee, recently met with officials of teleprompter cable television to determine methods in which teleprompter can improve and expand service to township residents. Meet.ing with Peter Berkowitz of teleprompter's division office, Voll said he was assured that recent reception and service problems in Middle Township can be solved by improving equipment, maintaining a continuous dialogue with customers and township officials. and installing a new reception tower in the Gosen area of the township Voll said, "If elected, I plan to.meet with representatives of Teleprompter on a regular basis to present problems of mutual interest affecting the quality of service being provided. . - ' ' ’
- . . , fO". „ NEWLY PROMOTED to sergeant were Troopers Samuel N. Hoffman, left. James F. Leckliner. both of Court House, and Chris A. Thraen, right, of Woodbine. All are assigned to the Hammonton barracks of the State Police.
jersey and he views the concept of local vs. state control as a basic political difference between the two major, parties. "IT REALLY is a political philosophy diffeVence rather than a North and South: The Democrats controlling the urban areas — the urban areas tending to be more liberal and tending not to be concerned with Home Rule. And the suburban and rural areas tending to be more conservative and very possessive of their rights and making their own decisions." ( According to Mr. Hurley, "over-regulation and centralization of power in > Trenton -i the loss of Home Rul?, the loss of tocaI control," represents a "basic philosophical difference
between Republicans and Democrats." HOWEVER, rather than banging awawat what has been, Hurley $ looking forward , to what can be, 'especially with the promise from the top of the Republican ticket: “I would think that we ought to spend more time talking about our benefits, and not talking about how \ye are shortchanged by Trenton. Although I do think we< ought to have a fair shake. "And Tome Kean, by the -vay, is the only candidate for governor I know who has said he will overcompendate in appointments to South Jersey — simply because he thinks we’ve been discriminated against in the Byrne years," Hurley sgid.
