Historical Slide, Tape Programs

COURT HOUSE - The County Historical and Genealogical Society with headqubr.terf at the Historical Museum, Route 9, is offering an unusual and informative ‘series of slide/taue programs which are available to schools, clubs and organizations in the county and throughout the state. e By appointment, groups of 20 or less may view these slides and listen to the tapes when visiting the' museum, ot- a volunteer will bring the programs to clubsf etc., if requested 'Carousels and cassette tapes may be borrowed on 1 24-hour loan. FOLLOWING ARE the programs available at this time: "Cedar Single Mining" (8 minutes) Research and photography by Robert Alexander. "Cape May County Indians ,, (12 minutes) Research and photography bylMiss Harriet Reardon. "Early Coun^. ty Doctors" (8 minutes) Research by Mrs. Thelma Cryder, Photography by William Van Ness. “Museum Sampler" (20 minutes) Selected slide views of county artifacts on exhibit in the museum. Commentary by Dr. Everett Townsend. "Historic Mechanic Street” (15, minutes) A slide presentation of the Mechanic Street Walk as

developed by Mrs Katherine McPherson and Mrs. Beatrice Heston. "The Shells of Seven-Mile Beach" (15 minutes) Research and commentary by pr. Albert Wood.. "Historic Route 9: Part 1. Cape May to Swainton" ($5 minutes). "Part 2. Swainton to Beesley's Point" (35 minutes) Oral history of 14 of the communities ties along Route 9 gleaned from ^the memories, records, and Wetlands Excursion POMONA’ - The Stockton State College Center for Environmental Research will offer a conference and excursion on South Jersey’s freshwater wetlands, entitled "Wetlands, More than Mud," Wednesday, Oct. 28. The evening confererfce is designed to present useful information to property owners, conservationists, realtors, engineers, builders, and public officials on the formation, recognition, and value of South Jersey’s freshwater wetlands. THESE SLIDE programs with taped commentary are produced by Dr. Townsned, who is one of about 100 volunteers serving as guides and providing other services at the museum. Like th? exhibits, the programs are in.a constant state of review and revisidn as new facts and materials become available. Dr. Townsend is a lifelong resident of the county and a ninth generation . descendant of John Townsend, whose home, built about. 1890, is still standing at Ocean View. Dr. Townsend lives in Clermont and spends his winters in Hollywood, Fla. The museum, is open 10 a m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday foeguid 1 ed tours and social events are sponsored throughout the year by the Historical Society. GOP Dinner Saturday WILDWOOD ^ Over 1,000 are expected at the County Republican Dinner, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, at Convention Ha^l here, it was announced by Jerry Livingston and Robert Hentges, county campaign coordinators. Republican -gtTBe>natorial candidate Tom Kean will be the main speaker. ENTERTAINMENT. DANCING. Kean and possibly some high officials from Washington will be the focal point of thp evening, Livingston said. The evening is scheduled as a fund-raiser and tribute to the entire Republican ticket with Kean at the top, James Hurley for senate, Joseph Chinnici and Guy Muziani for assembly; Beech Fox for sheriff, Anthony T. Catanoso and Gerald Thornton, freeholders and the local" Republican candidates.
