OF ALL THE SO-CALLED "techno" KOckers. Gary Numan has found the most success in this country. His Cara was a delightfully infectious single that deserved its ^hit status. Unfortunately, much of his music is boring and pretentious. Not so for his first albi/tn, Tubeway Army (Atco), which has finally been released here, after his other albums sold so well. The material is strong,-his singing has some warmth and humanity Jo it, and ,the performances are 'passionate. All in all, Gary Numan’s ■Cubeway Army might have been his peak and now’s the time to check it out'. THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE forthcoming rock film, Urghl'A.Muaic War (A&M) has just come otifand it’s an excellent way to catch up with some new music. Recorded live, tfce performances are upiformally exciting. High points are many, but people will definitely want to check out the cuts by Hie Police. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark! XTC, Devo. Joan Jett, Gary Numan. and The Au Pairs. If the movie can visually match the intensity of these performances than the whole project is sure to be & hit. THE SECOND ALBUM F.resh Fruit In Foreign Places (Sire), by Kid Creole and The Coconuts is a joyous experience. Combining influences of Latin, reggae, soul, disco, and rock to comdup with a highly personal sound, Kid Creole and The Cocbnuts are tone of the most unique recording artists around. This is a record not to be missed. ANY TROUBLE’S first album suffered from too much of an Elvis Costello influence, but their second. Wheels In Motion (Stiff), is exciting pop-rock in the tradition of mid-’60s British invasion bands such as The Dave Clark Five. Kinks, and Searchers. Strong, confident vocals with tight, rock steady rhythms only help to enhance the already spectacular songwriting Any Trouble, if given a few breaks, could emerge as one of the more'influential pop bands currently playing. They certainly have talent, now all they need are record sales. Give them a break! •
