Herald A Lantern 21 October 81
At tfw start of last wrek on Columbus Oay cap*. Naif High, of Green Cfeek. (iforge Thompson, of Carol Manor, and'Joe Walls, of Atlantic CitJ. and I tried to ' find some weakfish in the Bay The. weather had seemed to moderate the day before, and had come around light northeast, so the Bay seemed a good place to try, especially since we'd had some good reports fh>m up around Miah Maul way about big' hluefish. arid big weakfish The only problem was ' that it didn't stay, calm very long, because about 9 o'clock the wind'Ngot brisker. - anil the Bay started showing a^few •whiteeaps We •ongmplly headed for the edge of the f'unk Grounds, but on get ting there the visibility was so good 1 got to doubting my l/oran C.< and kept on •going We wound up near Miah Maul light on oyr first drift, and I learned .a new ]_ lesson Don't doubt your ’♦nsfruments. and’ don't br afraid to admit you're not quite sure where you.arc WK DIDN'T find much at tha' highly touted spc|. so we headed hack down the BayW the 60 Ft trough in* side of* Brandywine About this time a fellow came on the air Staying he was an S I inside of Bug Light, that he had 15 ish Well, we tried to find the Bug" on our way back, but the sea had got ten rough, and we arrived outside of the 60 ft Slough quickerthan we thought, so we started to fish there • We opt one Sea Robin in . that lAition. so we started
ifor Bug Lighf again, and onOe again we missed H, and this time we wound up almost at the mouth of the Maurice River; and there we. made the best catch of the day ( APT. NATK led off with a nice flounder, and then • Count” (George Thompson) got a dice one; then it was Joe Walls turn, and finally I caught one And that was all sfie wrote for the flatties Somewhere^ near the end of that drift, I caught a big oyster cracker,.find that would up the trip. We started running down the Bay again, still looking for Bug Light, but when'we saw the shoreline off Town Bank we realised we'd had it, and decided to call, it a day Now. in case .you’ve never had this experience let me say that I was too far offshore all day. because of the visibility, dnd I just never got a fix on it in those heavy seas (I imagine this will bring.forth some comments). That’s about all the fishing news I've been able to verify all week FVK HEARD that there were some stripers taken off the jetties, and one in the surf, but I didn't see them, and I probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to see them unless I'd been fishing in one of the producing locations—because the sfriper fishermen don't give out a lot of information I believe il would be a good time to try surf fishing or jetty fishing, because that seems.to be where the action is.
Mary Ellen Fisher. John Fisher's wife, from North Cape May, told me she had a banner week crabbing, and it sdems like there are a lot of crabs around right now Mary Ellen catches.a lot of ct-abs every season, and she says it's better right now than il wa» in
midsummer
I THINK IF we could get two nice days in a row we'd still have some good fisftmg.-'tS&t putting two hioe days babk to back is extremely difficult this fall. Stripers are.supposed to like rough water, and if this is completely true, we should haVe a banner year on Ibose rockfish in late October, and early
November.
In another week we’ll be down in I^Ueras trying to catch a channel bass (red drum), and 4W weather will probably straighten out, and a lot of fish will be caught on the Jersey Cape making us wish we were back here. It happens
State Eyes All Savers’ Tax Break
every year.
The fishing on our Cape of Nature has gbt to get bet > ter, it’s got nowhere to go but up. Irrthe meantime try to get in the lee of the wind, and you’ll probably wind up with a catch. Our fishing season isn’t over yet. but the weather "has to cooperate if we’re going to get good fishing here in
Cape May County.
NOW, ON TO one last subject. The elections are coming up. and it seems to / me that politics this year is more intense than ever. As you know, if you’re read my colugins before, I do not play politics;r I only vote I’m not going to endorse anybody, but let me point out one thing to help you cast your ballot: Look for the candidate that is talking about really doing ■ something about our environment. and the ones that are talking conserva- ' tioa Some politicans now in office - have demonstrated concern for our well being, and some of the candidates are talkf|ig abopt trying to stop toxic wastes and j outfalls. They arA the.oqes I'm going to
vote for. ^ I
.You make up your own mind, bu^jplcdse get out there andfvote We need everyone Voling for something, to keep ] our coufttry strong. Nuf f 11
MILLVILLE - Adoption of a bill pending in the state Legislature to exempt New Jersey residents from state income tax on interest earned on All Savers Certificates is crucial If the housing industry in New Jersey is to imprpve, according to James R ; Hurley, candidate for slate Senate and current , Assembly Minority
Leader.
"When the United States Congress passed the All Savers Act allowing individual savers to earn up to 11,000 and couples to earn up to $2,000 tax-free on one year, high interest sav*. ings certificates, many people assumed they were .also exempt from state income taxes," Hurley said. "But this ismot so.’ "WE NEED, TO en courage people to invest in these certicates to help provide much needed mortgage and construction mftney in New Jersey," Hurley said. "Therefore, exempting the interest on these certificates from stale income tax is essential as an incentive.’’ 1 lurley, currently * serving his 11th year in the Assembly, pointed^aut that the need for housing in New Jersey has reached crisis
proportions.
•TEN YEARS AGO. authorities estirtiated tho-» need for new ^lousing in New Jersey at BJTjwp units per year for the subsequent 10 years, or 800,000 units," he explained. "Only about, half that number were built. The current need now stands at almost the tame level. We heed at least 750,000 additional housing units within the current
decade."
"The state Republican party is committed to providing enough new Housing opportunities so that each New Jerseyan may obtain decent, affordable shelter within this aecade. Savings programs like the All Sayers Act can help do just that." Hurley said. "WE JCAN’T AFFORD to have people turned off to these certificates when they discover they are not
exempt from state income .taxes,” Hurlfey said. "Passage of this bill is absolutely essential. Immediate action must be taken to insure its adoption . so our state's ailing housing industry may receive a
boost.”
Hundreds of those who invested in the new All Savers Certificates which became available Oct. 1, were up§et to discover they would only be exempt fi;om federal income tax, Hurley continued. "Givtog New Jersey’s housingiindustry a shot in ;the arm will help improve' the entire state's economic outlook." Hurley said. "Individual savings accounts provide the best and most economical source of funds ,for residential mortgages. By also exempting- these All Savers Certificates from state income tax, we will encourage more people to invest*in them, thus providing an even greater mortgage base in the
state."
