COURT HtaE - "During all my years^s County 4-H Agent I got to know many residents on a first name basis.' 1 states MeJ Lockwood, fund drive chairman of the 1982 Red
Cross Campaign, f
"I've s&m just how much Red Cross has helped many county families. That'swhy I look forward to a successful drive with a goal of 830,000,” Dockwobd con-
tinued.
RED CROSS. NOW in its second century of helping Americans, is asking everyone's help to raise funds for its many services. The^e services include water safety, service to military families, nursing, disaster relief, and blood service. “Many of my neighbors give blood at the various blood visit^sponsored by the Red CT^ss’ PennJersey blood services. A visit to the processing center in Pleasantville impresses the visitor as to the 'vast technology behind this, and all of Red Cross," Lockwood said. He cited the fact that all the county’s blood needs are covered through the Red
Cross.
"ST'S BEEN VERY encouraging for me to see the \enthusiasm of youth through my years as 4-H agent I have seen their energies channeled into positive things. OnDs.of these positive things is the youth-oriented Red Cross activities such as the high school blood visits and water safety courses," said Ldrowood.
Quit MUA Dems Tell Hurley crfimT HOUSE - Middie- Township Mayor Samuel DeVico and Cape May County Democratic Chairman James lannone today called upon Assemblyman James Hurley to step down from - his position as public relations consultant to. the County Municipal Utilities ^Authority pending an investigation, by the Attorney General which they are requesting to determine if It is appropriate (or Hurley to hold dual positions.' | "I have serious reservations that an Assemblyfnan 'who assists in funding re quests (8 percent 6f the MUA'safunding comes from Trentooi should 'benefit from the receipt of those state funds." DeVico said. "We are concered that a possible conflict of interest exists.” HURLEY. a MJLLVILLE resident, Jias collected over $50,000 in the last 18 months as the public relations consultant to the MUA. This figure includes his $45 per hour fee plus other out-of-pocket expenses such as mileage, nipals, and incidentals "The incident which prompted the inquiries into Hurley’s activities was the MUA's awarding (without competitive bidding) of a second contract on Sept. 17 which pays him an additional 887.50 per hour to do promotions for the Solid Waste Management Plan," lannone said. "I QUESTION WHY we are spending $127.50 per hour for a public relations man who doesn’t even live in Cape May County. Would it not benefit our own county economy to hire Cape May residents so we can put our people to work?J-' lannone asked! "Furthermore, if wW hired local people, we wouldn't have to pay the 18 cents per mile Hurley vouches to get to work from Millville, Cumberland County. DeVico said he plans to contact State Senate Presi dent Joseph Merlino to determine 4 if the Senate Ethics Committee and the Assembly Ethics Committee might have jurisdiction over Hurley’s activities. "I am appalled at the MUA and this wasteful spending of the taxpayers' dollars," DeVico said.
Crime Panel OKs Hughes Aid Bill
WASHINGTON - The House Subcommittee on Crime, chaired by Congressman Bill Hi/ghcs (D-NJ), has given unanimous bipartisan approval to a measure that would provide upwards of $170 million in federal financial assistance to State and local law enforce-
ment.
Hughes, who authored the bill, called it "a moderate but essential pra gram to curb the rising tide of violent and other crime in our society." The bill will authorize federal matching funds to help state and Iqcal governments carry out crime , fighting programs which
have proven their effectiveness over the years. Eligible for Ending are programs to detect and prosecute career criminals, to prevent arson, to carry out undercover "sting" operations. * to aid victims of crime, and to respond to serious
juvenile crime.
At the f»ame time, the Hughes bill also creates a new rapid Federal response progran^to help local areas plagued with a major crime problem, much in the same way that the Federal government now aids communities which are stricken with natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods.
