community like Ocean City, asserts Citizens Against Higher Taxes in its campaign to retain present bar
closing hours .
Robert F. Conroy Jr., CAHT chairman, declared in a'news retaue that “the cat Jumped out of the bag last Wednesday night at the Taxpayers’ meeting when a member bluntly said that Ocean City, which is completely diy, has a quality of life which should be copied in Lower Township." ACCORDING TO Conroy, himself a -tavern owner, “this is a threat not only to taverns and restaurants which serve cocktails, but also to the clubs such as the Fishing Club, Sons of Italy, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Col-
umbus."
CAHT maintains that 26 licensed ' beverage establishments pay approximately $400,000 In tarffes and sewer rentals, which relieves the average homeowner. Of this sum, the organization says, approximately' $200,000 is school taxes. "WE NEED presef closing hours during the tourist season to make up for 4he poor business periods dur-
ing the winter months,
Conroy stated.
"Why anyone wants to destroy our summer trade is beyond me. Tourists come here for vacations and want to enjoy themselyfes. This is the one time they, can stay out late and sleep late," he con-
tinued.
“We also have hundreds of employees who do not quit their regular jobs until late. They also want to be able to enjoy a period of relaxation after they quit work, which could be as ilate as 2 a.m!". THE PRESENT closing hours are 3 am throughput the year. However, patrbns who are inside at 3 o’clock may re- «* main until 5 o’clock during the period from Memorial Day to the end of September. % Should Lower Township become dry, all licensed establishments and liquor sjtores would be put out of business, Conroy said. "He also declared that Lower Township Police requested
the present hours two years ago in order to prevent a mass exodus of patrons onto the streets at t a.m. By allowing patrons to remain until 5, they could leave gradually during a twohour period, Conroy ex-
PHE POLICE were right. The present hours really work. By changing to a flat 3 a m. closing, conditions at 3 o’clock would become difficult and would aggravate a prrtMem for the police. The" summer hours Help everyone," he said The tavern and club industry of Lower Township > employs 1,200 people, Conroy stated. “Payrolls run into the millions. Obviously, summer trade creates hundreds of jobs and these would be threafened and probably eliminated if closing hours are cut back. The way to save these jobs and maintain a strong tax base is by voting no oh Tuesday," Conroy concluded in his news release.
