Ricci For Farm Bond Question BRIDGETON Assembly candidate Henry Ricci has called on the voters of Cumberland and Cape May counties to give their approval to the Farmland Preservation Bond question. L The Cumberland County Freeholder noted farmland has become a diminishing . resource worldwide. “There has been an increased public concern over our qiuraty food supply, energy and inflation. Etch, of us has a stake in this' state's ability to produce food. Our loss of farmland is a public problem" he stated in a news release. RICCI, A Democratic candidate, emphasized that New Jersey, the most densely populated state in the country,-still has approximately 1 million acres of farmland ^nd that the state, at the present ime, is losing between - 5,000 to 10,000 a year. "The $50 million bond issue will be used to sustain viable- farming communities and establish permanent agricultural areas," he jfaid. "Thebenefits to New Jersey are both economic and environ mental. “FIRST, local municipalities will not lose revenues on farmland and, by saving productive farmland^ we can strengthen our commitment to "agriculture to improve the business climate. Secondly , the noil - and water conservation -measures provided-for in the program will help to correct out farmland’s soil erosion and water management problems." The bond issue, which also has the endorsement of gubernatorial candidate Cong. James J. Florio, will fund up to 50 per cent of the cost of farmland acquisition easements and for soil and water conservation of land devoted to farmland preservation. Municipalities and counties, - would pay the other 50 per cent. At least eight counties already are preparing their agricultural funding programs.
