Hurley F ocuses On Jobs MILLVILLE - Skyrocketing unemployment rates in Cumberland County ark "just one more indication of Ed Salmon’s ineffectiveness in office," charged James R. Hurley, Republican candidate for State Seante. . . - "Throughout his tenure ■ as a county freeholder and as a member of the County . Economic Development . Board, Salmon Ijas been totally ineffective in alleviating this county's mounting unemployment,” 'Hurley said. ' DURING RECENT months Cumberland County had over 10 percent of its residents unemployed, ranking as the • seventh highest district in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Reports," Hurley continued, "fie talks about improving the employment situation, but what has he done while he has had the opportunity?” Hurley said he has spearheaded a number of activities in the county designed to match potentipl workers with employers. "I AM IN the process of coordinating a conference in Cumberland County of members of the labor force, employers and local officials to target specific problems and attempt to alleviate spiraling unemployment," Hurley said. Unemployment has been a growing problem throughout the state and has been aggravated by the Democratic administration’s negative attitude toward business, Hurley charged. "In 1980, when Ford Motor Co. closed its assembly plant in Mahwah, the Democrats appointed a committee to study the recession and recommend solutions,’’ the Assemblyman said. "Well, we’re still waiting for results from their study. ••ON THE OTHER hand," he continued, "I appointed a committee at about the same time. The (Republican Economic Steering Committee to 1 Upgrade Employment (RESCUE), issued' its report with recommendations in September Of 1980. "Its recommenoations have been completely ignored by the Democratic administration," Hurley added. "The Democrats make a lot of noise about creating new jobs, but apparently, the only place they have successfully provided any new jobs is on the state payroll," he added.
