Two Hours Less To be Disturbed
by Catherine Clark The Ixiwer Township Taxpayers Association in a special meeting OOt. 21 urged a Ye* vote on Public Question No. 9 on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election. A Yes vote on fhis question would shorten tavern hours during the summer season from a present 5 a.m. closing to a 3 a m. closing. The Taxpayers Association believes that after many relatively unsuccessful local attempts to resolve the prc\ blems the residential community experiences as a result dt some of the summertime tavern business, the tirtfe has comp.for the people who live in the community ^to determine the fime limits for conducting bar business. THE TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION questions the accuracy of the advertisements some tavern owners have placed in several lopal papers (under the organization name of Citizens Against Higher Taxes) in regard to tax increases and the extent of impact on the local economy. The Taxpayers Association does not believe that homeowners’ taxes could conceivably be increased $100 per-year due to bar closing time even if every tavern in the township decided to close its doors The Taxpayers' Association is equally convinced that the twojioilr shortening of hours in‘the middle of the nighl^ill have nothing like the devastating economic impact Aeing oredicted by some tavern owners. Cape May’^averns. A>r example, seem to be able to operate a profitable, successful business and re-open each summer season ' with a 3 a m. closing all summer THE TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION feels that all
residents and property owners in the community pay property taxes and sewer fees in proportion to the benefits and services that they enjoy as a result of ownership and residence in the. township. The payment of property and sewer taxes is a requirement placed on all members of a community and does not constitute a guarantee of successful business enterprise — for a .tavern owner or any other person or property owner. , The Taxpayers Association finds that changing the closing time obbars from 5 a.m. to 3 a.m. does not present a special business hardship for bar owners nor should it in any way affect the tax rates or revenues in Lower Township. TIIK.TAVERNS WILL STILL have 20 hours a day in which to cdnduct business, and the rest of the residents of the township will have 2 hours less in the middle of the night to be disturbed by noise, Ijtter, public disturbance. drunken driving and loss of police protection due to liquor-reJafed incidents. The Taxpayers Asociation considers a 3 a m. closing to be the. best compnimise the voters can make between the needs of the tourist economy and the needs of the residential community in which the taverns operate. Therefore,-the association endorses a Yes vote to close the bafS at 3 a m. as a measure to improve the quality of life for all the residents of the township "Cass' K Ctarh Is president of the Lower Township Taxpayers Assn, and this represents the association’s view. ly impressed with his successful efforts stopping the City of Philadelphia from dumping raw sewage off our - precious beaches. Can you imagine dumping 30 million gallons of sewage just miles from our Seven Mile Beach resorts! . Moreover, while his opponent attacks frlorio on television about his votes in the area of spending, it was Tom Kean who votfed 13 times for new or increased taxes wrrite Kean was an Assemblyman and Florio was voted against the state income tax I have followed Jim Florio and his accomplishments and I am aware of his abilities. I am voting for Jim Florio on Nov. 3 because he is the better candidate by a long shot. We need him in Trenton to represent our interests in Cape May County.

by Patricia Ann Callinan As residents and taxpayers of the Borough of Wildwood Crest, we’d like to state that we are very much in favor of beach fees for our community. We realize that inflation and maintenance costs have skyrocketed over the years, and in order for our community &.T give the services expected by our tourists, beach fees are a MUST! . . Various communities have adopted the beach fees, and revenues from such fees are keeping the taxes down. A wise community will accept ideas and information from far and wide, in order to be able to make sound decisions at home, We, as taxpayers, feel that Borough Commission sltould present the ordinance and press for its passage. The individuals who oppose this ordinance should be informed and educated to the benefits of its passage Patricia Callinan is a Jefferson Ave. resident. She wrote this letter to Mayor John Pantalone.
She's Outraged By Kean Stand
by Joan L. Brewer Having followed the race for governor very carefully, my husband and I have decided to support Congressman. Jim Florio for governor Nov. 3. There are two items which influenced our decision. One, James Tobin, the Nobel Prize Winner in Economics labeled Reagans Economic Plan as counterproductive. Tobin saidAhat Reaganomics will not end inflation but rather wilLredistribute wealth, power and opportunity to the wealthy and powerful. This report in Saturday's major newspapers was the deciding factor Since Tom K6an is a carbon copy of the President and his fiscal policies, how can we support him? Our second reason was Kean's remarks in last Sun-
day's debate regarding senior citizens. When asked how he would solve the problem of senior citizens and the rising cost of maintaining a home. Kean said that we should move the seniors in with their neighbors and share the same house. Can you imagine such a suggestion! I was outraged There is no question that our next governor will face some tough decisions but. I trust Jim Florio to lead this state for the next four years. Tom Kean and his Voodoo theory of supply economics can only benefit the rich, the wealthy, and the special interests. J%ki L Brewer lives on Stone Harbor Blvd.. Middle Township.
