Pinner Honors Police Chief

AVALON — A* variety of tributes was paid Police • Chief Joseph' E. Foley on his 25 years of service to the borough at a dinner in the borough Community Hall In response, Foley gave special thanks to his wife. Isabel, and the late Gen. Edgar V.H Bell, former mayor He also expressed his pleasure at working TR(ith the present council and Borough Administrator Andrew Bednarek. PAYING TRIBUTE to Foley were: Chief William Donahue of Stone Harbor presenting a plaque from the Cape May ^County Police Chiefs Association; William Matthews of the Prosecutor's Office Police Training School with a plaqpe; William I,eahy, president of the* Avalon Chamber of Commerce, with a plaque; Freeholder Gerald Thopnton, on behalf of the Freeholders, read and presented a. proclamation. Freeholder Director Anthony Catanqso read a citation from Assemblyman Hurley and Chinnici on behdlf of the N.J. Assembly; Phillip Matalucci, cousin and county treasurer, read a .citation and presented the chief with a personalized elephant; Surrogate , Robert Hentges noteiFT several incidents of cooperation betweeiv his office find the Chief and presented a certificate. AVALON . COUNCIL President Bachel Sloan read a letlcrkof gratitude and commendation from Mayor Ellsworth Armacost and she and (fellow council person* Jim Busha. Stewart Gray and Grace Keen presented him with a plaque of appreciation. Avalon' Home and Land Owner Association President Thomas McKettrick presented a certificale of appreciation and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Campbell, gave the'chief a "roast.Several neighbors paid tribute to the Chief in addition to which Griffith Sloan presented Foley with a gift from all those present and another from RobeN Golden, while John .Honor presented a captain^ hat and T-shfrt. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith Sloan, Det. Sgt. Charles Shaw, Sandy Riddler, Virginirf Oler, Jane Stapleton and the Avalon Recreation Department FOLEY BECAME a patrolman 25 years ago and has been chief for 13 years. He was a charter member of the County Police Training Committee and served as president for three years. While he has been serving the Avalon PoljceV Department, it has been the first in the county to have a separate Public Safety Building and to institute 2-man patrols yearrdund. Avalon was one of thfee communities to begir\ the Juvenile Division Program, the Senior Alone Program and the House Security Check and Operation I.D. As director of Public Safety. Chief Foley als has charge over the beach tag inspectors and lifeguards.
