Here we are right in the midst of the yearly visit of the November Shooting Stars. Have you seen any? People used to be-yery much afraid of shooting stars. They thought they foretold war, or famine, or plague, or even the end of the world. But astronomers have studied them carefully for many, many years, and they have learned what the metoeors are. Meteors appear at regular intervals and do not cause any kind of harm in space. Th*y are tiny particles of stone or metal drifting in space, and as our Earth comes around near them each November in its trip around the sun, some of the nearest of these.little particles are attracted to it. AS THEY COME INTO OUR atmosphere, friction caused by theirjiigh spfced makes them gfct hot. white hot, so that they shine like stars as they fall to earth. This is the reason they are chlled shooting stars. Sometimes the little pieces of metal or stone-reach the Earth, but usually they burn themselves out oh the way. and nothing but fine dust falls. Some larger meteors havd reached the Earth, tho The craters on the moon are now thought to be great splashes made by meteors.
